I suppose I still think things can be "sold together" without physically needing to exist within the same box. :)
It's certainly a possibility (I mean, pretty much anything's possible, considering quantum mechanic phenomena and whatnot), but at least I personally feel it would be really weird if you had to put your expensive watch together yourself first before you could strap it to your wrist. All for the very minor inconvenience of reducing the number of SKUs in their supply chain.

Car manufacturers offer even more combos, with chassis variations, different colors and materials of the interior, engine options, accessories and so on, and they seem to be managing. (Car analogies always work, in every situation... ;))

Well one of us has to be right!!!!! :D

Please note: I'm not suggesting the watch body is sold without a band.
Only that they are in separate box's from factory to store, until the salesperson picks them and hands the selection to the buying customer.

I'm not even suggesting the customer can mix any body and strap, they may still only be "buyable" in pre-approved combinations.

It would, to me anyway, seem silly, if you had come into my Apple store foe a Apple Watch with white strap, and I tell you we are all out of white and black, but we still have green and blue and pink.

If you would like to buy a green or blue or pink one, then I can offer to sell you a white strap separately as I have plenty of those, but I don't have any watches that a pre-packed with white straps.

Would that scenario, which would happen, seem silly?

1. iPod
2. You're still talking about as many SKUs
3. I think there will be some base combinations that all have lowest cost bands

Tell me what you think about this.
Also, think how you would sell it and the logistics of doing it any other way.

Feel free to disagree, but, in my mind the only sensible manner to sell the watch is to box the bodies and straps separately at the factory, ship them to Apple stores like this.
And only at the final point of sale does the Apple salesperson pick, from their storeroom the body and strap you wish.

Rubbish you say, ok, well, how else would you do it?
Think about it for a moment.

Do you think "This" would be practical instead?

(Can't be bothered to type any more in!) :D

You see what I am getting at, how crazy this would be to stock in this manner, with pre-packaged Bodies and Straps.

It would be far far more sensible to have the bodies and straps all separate, right up until the Apple salesman goes to the stock room, takes out the combination the customer had bought and hands them over.

Can you imagine the scenario.
Walking into the store for a Apple Watch with white band, but the ones with white band have all sold out, so you have to have one with the black band it comes boxed with, but you can buy the white band separate.

Why would you even consider pre packing bodies and straps as it will cause so much difficulty and the need to carry far more stock permutations?

You thoughts?

They can possibly do it this way at an Apple store.
Obviously NOT at a Best Buy.

Not saying they won't do it this way... another way to push people into going to an actual Apple Store for their purchase.

Each version will have a base model band.
Some bands will only be sold separate and never come with a base model.

Sport edition will only be available with the plastic sport band in a few basic colors.

Stainless steel will have maybe 2 band versions maybe the link band and a leather band in a few colors. And yes inventory will be crazy with the size and style.

I really believe Apple will have a 2 week window were they will show models in stores allowing people to try on and pre order if they want, why else have this event 4 weeks before shipping? Gives them a little clue on popularity.
