I have a problem with excessive bandwidth abuse on my home's wired Ethernet network. I've been trying to use Ethereal to intercept packets and such that are for p2p from my sister's comp (i've got her passwords anyway, cause she's so stupid but anyway.... i'm just someone who's 14 and knows about this stuff). The problem is even in promiscious mode, I still do not see any traffic going to or from her machine. I heard somewhere that both machines need to be in that mode. Problem is I don't know the ifconfig syntax for it. Anyone got an idea on what to do?

Easy ways to limits peoples bandwidth on a LAN without much effort:

Replace their network cable with a homemade job made from a POS phone cable that has a lot of creases in it. Works well to foul up peoples pings for online gaming too.

If that doesn't do it (or if they notice the cable swap) just periodically disconnect their plug enough to have it fail, but not enough that it's obvious. I have done it more than once to people at work just to laugh when tech support gets called.

No reason to get crazy here with QoS software and such, stick to the old fashioned methods. As a last resort jab a fork in her ethernet port repeatedly until the desired result is achieved. Edit: For the chronically stupid, this will permanently damage the computer and cost you millions, so don't do it unless you're really bored.
