This is probably a stupid question. If I go over to a friend's place and they already have AppleTV but we want to watch a movie that I purchased, can I just sign him out of Apple TV and sign in with my information?

yeah why not just airplay it? Bring a lighting cable so you can plug in your device (keep it charged).

Yes you can. I do it all the time. As others have stated, airplay is an option but I prefer to simply sign in & eliminate an extra point of a possible problem. The family sharing is an option but then they are tied to your payment method.
