So I've been trying to install the watchOS 10.3 update on my Apple Watch Ultra (1st gen) for two days now. But for some reason the Ultra (running watchOS 10.2) could never download the update. I got sick of troubleshooting it (nothing ever worked) and did a factory reset on my Apple Watch.

Now the Ultra fails to pair with my iPhone when I try to set it up again using the backup. I can only get the Ultra to even function part-way by setting it up as a new watch. However, now most of the apps have a grey circle over them and don't launch (see pic). These grey circles do not go away (or they haven't over the last five hours at least). Also, the Ultra still will not update to watchOS 10.3.

In other words, my Ultra is esentially useless now because even after a factory reset most of the apps won't launch on it.

Any thoughts/help?

Hmm, I think your subject line could use some work... sounds like you have a !@#$ed watch that won't download the update or even run properly, not one that the update !@#$ed up.

"Most" apps won't launch... will Settings? If so, try Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents & Settings, and try pairing it again without restoring a backup. If that works, then install 10.3.

My first time with iOS 10 on Ultra 1 I had something similar.

This seems absurd, but I was trying to setup and pair the watch but while not wearing it for part of the process. I guess what I’m saying is that a full reset and configuration of the watch while wearing the Ultra (and not wearing my older watch) and it went through. Maybe it’s not related but if you have a second watch, take it off and turn it off. Ensure you’re wearing the Ultra the entire time during the process, aside from when you must turn it off to charge/update. I feel like perhaps my handling of the two watches at once confused things.

1. re-boot your iPhone - also what model/iOS version?
2. un-pair AW
3. re-pair AW and setup as NEW (do not restore from backup)
4. watchOS version?
