The new watchOS 10 update that is coming later this year will work with all versions of the Apple Watch that were able to run watchOS 9, according to Apple's watchOS 10 preview site.

The update is compatible with the Apple Watch Series 4 and later, with a full list below.
  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • Apple Watch SE (All models)
  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Ultra
Apple warns that not all features will be available on all devices, so some of the more system intensive functions could be limited to newer Apple Watch models with more advanced processors.

In addition to Apple Watch Series 4 or later, to run watchOS 10, users will also need an iPhone capable of running iOS 17. This includes the iPhone XS or later and iPhone XR or later.

Requires iPhone XS or newer. Really!?!? Doesn't affect me as I have a 14, but that seems a little silly.
Because like any WatchOS updates it requires the newest version of iOS. iOS dropped support for anything below XS. iOS 17 drops support for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the iPhone X (all of which were supported on iOS 16)

I have an watch 8 and an iPhone X. I can't update to the watchOS10. It will stay like this for years to come. What sofisticated update is watchos10? What about 17? What extrordinary, exciting, all new experiences... etc etc etc! The same "empty" overused words for years and years is in this "new" update... nothing - just $ needed in the pockets of apple as the sales of some of their products are falling. Disgusting... TIM$... but, as long as the herd is managed with flashy colors and "magic" words, the wheel just rolls on...

It’s not like the last 3 or 4 Apple Watch series have basically the same processor. Oh wait…

If all I'm lacking with my Series 7 is golf and tennis swing detection I'm fine with that. We'll see if they manage to pack any new sensors or power efficiency into this year's.

It is time for Apple to unlink the apple watch from ios and not to be the victim of the ios updates. It is a different product, standalone product with different functions and capabilities. Apple watch doesn't come in the same box as the iPhone as an ACCESSORY as it was treated as such from the begining. It is a different product, marketed as a different product. Otherwise, some people may wake up and take some necessary actions.
