Yesterday I updated my iPhone (6s Plus) to 9.3 - went smoothly, no big deal. However the Apple Watch I just picked up (stainless 42mm) was still running WatchOS 1.0.1. I didn't realize this would be an issue that would essentially disable the watch until it was updated to 2.2, but apparently it is!

I spent yesterday afternoon attempting to get the 2.2 update downloaded and installed. The download time for the 500MB or so update seemed ridiculously long, and on completion it gave me an error saying that I wasn't connected to the internet. It repeated this twice yesterday, and again today.

After the last time and resetting both devices and the update, I'm now stuck on "estimating time remaining" on the download - where it's been for over an hour now.

Has anyone else had issues like this? Is there a known fix? So far I've tried turning both devices off and then back on, reset my internet connection/router to ensure that wasn't the issue, and I've unpaired/repaired the iPhone and Apple Watch.

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions!

I got my AW yesterday with 2.1 on it. It took 4 1/2 hours here on my home 50mb fiber connection. I was new to AW yesterday and thought something was wrong. I don't know if this was normal or not. Maybe Apple's servers were being hit hard with lots of OS downloads.

When was WatchOS 2.2 released?

That was my thought too - perhaps a hard server hit, as it was only released earlier this week with the press event. I reset it another couple times, and it's still stuck on "estimating download time". I'll likely leave both the phone and watch overnight and hope for good news in the morning.

This does not sound right. You might want to reset the Watch to see if that helps (assuming the "resets" you mentioned in your last post were not Watch resets) Instructions ==> http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/15/reset-erase-apple-watch/

Doing a full reset got the download working again! Thanks for the tip - I had assumed resetting the pairing was actually restoring the watch, but in fact it wasn't - hence being caught in the same look through multiple resets. Doing an actual restore triggered the download to work again, so here's hoping after the ridiculously slow download finishes again that it goes through!

Finally got it all sorted out, so I thought I'd post the solution that worked for anyone else that might get stuck and search.

To reset the download, I unpaired the iPhone and Apple Watch, restored the Apple Watch, then power cycled both devices. This got the download up and running again, and despite a good three hours to download, it was successful. I still got the connection error, but rather than voiding the download, an "Install Now" option appeared, which did end up working.

Thanks for the advice, and hopefully this thread helps any others that end up stuck!

My iPhone 6 phones took over a gig each to update. I updated the watch the next day and today it just died. I could not get it to start up. I ended up holding down the crown and the power button for over 20 seconds to get anything to happen.

My stainless steel watch that I've had a year got super super hot then it kind of acted like a dead brick after allegedly successfully updating according to my iPhone. I wore it anyway even though there was no display whatsoever and even though attempts to reset it seemed to do nothing, though the Apple logo would come on for a few seconds then it went black and completely unresponsive.

I was resolved to call Apple for an appointment with a Genius but when I got home from my errands, I flipped my wrist to look at it and it was working just fine!

It was the weirdest update ever.

I just bought a new gold sport and updated that with no problem and no overheating and no weirdness. I'm at a loss to know what, if anything went wrong in updating my other watch.

I'm assuming there's just something a bit wonky with the update itself, as there were also some issues with 9.3 on select devices. Hopefully Apple works out the kinks before the next release!

2.2 has bricked my watch. The update stuck at about 90% completion then sat there overnight. The app on my phone says the watch is up to date.

I can't unpair or reset.

Tried to reset the watch manually from the watch itself. It just reboots, asks for my passcode, then starts some sort of update, stopping at the same point.

I can't seem to do a hard reset from the watch itself. Great.

For me, holding the crown gave the option to cancel and restore the Watch when it was essentially stuck. Might be worth a shot?
