While this will be a change to my routine of when I charge my Apple Watch (worn all day - taken off when getting into bed and put on charger / nightstand mode - put back on as soon as I wake up and get out of bed), I can see it working.

Maybe charge Apple Watch when I've basically wound down and gotten into bed, should give me an hour or so of charging before falling asleep, using sleep tracking, putting back on charge when waking up, and then putting on watch when I "go to work" (who knows when that'll be). I could deal with that for the benefit of sleep tracking overnight.

Any word on if the Series 3 will have sleep tracking?

I couldn't find anything about compatibility but my assumption is that the Series 3 will support this sleep tracking.

1) Sleep tracking doesn't use sensors the S3 doesn't have.
2) Apple continues to sell the S3, so it would be very un-Apple like to sell something that doesn't support its upcoming flagship feature.
3) Battery life of the S3 is enough to get you through the day and night.

I seriously am always very surprised, and frankly curious, how people drain their watch batteries so fast that they don't make it till the end of the day.

I bought my S3 in October 2017 right after its release and still i get about 36 to 40 hours of battery life. And I work out daily, even now the gym is closed, I do 5 to 8km long walks every day with the heart rate monitor turned off. I listen to music or a podcast on my iPhone while walking and use my watch to play/pause/skip and adjust the volume.

Edit: Just found a source! 9to5Mac reports that Apple will drop support for the Series 1 and 2 with the release of WatchOS 7.

Just wish it had a longer battery life. I have a Fitbit that lasts a week before needing to recharge. Sure, not as powerful as an Apple Watch, and an Apple Watch charges in only an hour, but I really like not having to remember to charge it every day.

Hmm, even though Autosleep has it's inadequacies I think I'll stick with them. The ability to see how much of my sleep was deep sleep is quite valuable.

Will it detect rhythmic hand movements handling the liquid soap device when sleeping?

i've used 3rd party apps to track my sleep for years. it never uses more that 5-8% of battery overnight, and i imagine that this OS-level sleep tracking will be even more power efficient.
OS-level sleep tracking, and also it turns off the always-on display on the Watch 5 (and presumably Watch 6), which will result in even more power savings.

Nothing on oxygen monitoring.
If it's a feature that will only be in new hardware come September, then they'd never announce it at WWDC.

That’s exactly the point. If it’s a question of software, it makes me wonder if they’ll crippled it to work only on AW6.

Almost certainly. It'll be along the lines of other features that have come to devices in the past where it's technically capable (and been enabled by jailbreaks etc) but they'll say the existing sensor "isn't quite 100% for it" or that it needs hardware processing in the latest CPU.

Better than a day and a half? They don't even advertise more than a day of battery. The biggest user is workouts.

I quoted the wrong post. I meant to quote the person that said they only get 8 hours...

Your watch is either too old or the battery has issues. My series 4 lasts at least a day and half.
Mines the new titanium version I have never gone past 6 in the evening before it goes into its conservation mode. I love the watch for placing calls while running calling Ubers etc its even replaced my phone for good chunks of the day when I dont want to bring it with me but the battery life isnt there yet for heavy usage.

I’m sure there’s some scenario in which I’d want to wear a watch to bed, but I can’t imagine what that might be. Certainly not to track my sleep.

This, the hand washing, even smarter Siri... feels like we are on a path where our phones (and other smart devices) are going to take the driver's seat and I'm not sure I like that thought.

I’m surprised this feature wasn’t reserved for Apple Watch Series 6. Glad to getting it on my Series 5.

Can anyone with knowledge of the feature or running the beta comment on whether this has a smart alarm component that wakes you at an optimal point of sleep to be awakened by a certain time?

Moreover I wonder if there Will be integration with Beddit. Will they be complementary or redundant?

I wonder if the macOS unlock with Apple Watch functionality is disabled while in sleep mode. Anyone know?

The alarm sounds at the time you set it to wake you. No smart features. The other thing it does now is alarm on the watch and not the phone which I don't care for.

I have a Series 4 and honestly I don't understand how people find the battery so problematic. It lasts nearly two days, even if I use a sleep monitoring app (on Airplane Mode during the night).

I don't know, charge it in the morning before going to work or something. Do you guys shower with it?!

I'm excited about this! Sleep tracking, and silent haptic-wake alarms were some feature I was sad to lose when I swapped my FitBit for an Apple Watch.

I just charge my watch for the first 30min of my work day once I get to the office.
The watch alarm can be silent but, it doesn’t look like there is a way to keep the phone silent as well with the sleep tracking alarm set up.
