First full day using 8 on my series 4 and when trying to dismiss texts by tapping the, well, Dismiss button, I instead sent one of the canned replies (causing embarassing nonsensical replies ). Happened prob five or six times. Am I losing my mind or dexterity? Is this a possible bug or did the target area change just enough to cause this? Wondering if Anyone else had this problem…..

Glad someone else is having the same issue! It is happening to me with a series 4 steel 44mm. I also know of someone else this is happing to - after they also sent me random replies and realised after it was from their watch which is a series 5 aluminium 44mm.

Phew! So I'm not going crazy. It's an annoying issue, regardless.

The entire Messages experience is wonky for me. Some convos are only showing the other persons messages to me, the convo list is several messages behind until you scroll down and then back up again.

I've seen this issue since upgrading to watchOS 8 last week. Tested it this morning with my VOIP number and reproduced it each time.

More validation, thanks. Well, add to the growing list of iOS/WatchOSiPadOS bugs, I guess?

I've stopped using the Dismiss button for now, which isn't ideal.

I think Apple needs to get its employees back in the office ASAP.

Adding my identical experience here. tested it twice this morning (after sending numerous inadvertent auto-replies). Both times I tested I was very carefull to touch only the "dismiss" button yet, each time, autoreplies were sent.

Edit to add - like many here, I am using a Series 4 (stainless steel), so maybe that is a relevant data point. Perhaps the code in Watch OS8 to account for the larger screen for Series 7 has led to some inaccuracies in registering the proper placement of the dismiss button on older/smaller screens.

Same exact problem here, it's driving me crazy..I'll have to stop using dismiss button in messages

I had the same thought. I noticed a similar issue in the Mindfulness app--when finished with breathing, tapping "Done" button doesn't register unless I scroll completely to the bottom of the screen and the button is 100% in view with space around it. The target/hit box area seems to be a little bit off.

Yes, same issue here. Worked with Apple Support and thought it was resolved but no. Seems you have to have the precision of a needle point to get the Dismiss button and not the underlying auto-reply.

This is a major Apple brain-fart! Until they fix it I've turned off "Smart Replies" in Settings/Messages/Default Replies/Smart Replies. I also deleted all of the Apple-supplied default replies and will create my own when the problem is fixed, although I never used the default replies anyway. You just gotta love how Apple usually creates as many problems as they do "new features".

I have this problem all the time. And worse, if I don’t hit ‘dismiss,’ my watch continuously taps my wrist until I do hit dismiss. At which point, inevitably I hit an auto-reply instead

Not fixed for me in latest update (4th gen watch). Grrrrr.

Seems to be fixed (for me, at least) in today's Watch update. Thanks to everyone for their input!

Hey all... same issue here since os8 on my series7 watch. Hoping next update will fix it. Till then I am no longer using the Dismiss function on messages. :(

Just popping back in to say this seems resolved for me in watchOS 8.1. I managed to send one “under the button” response, but only when actively trying to mostly miss the Dismiss button. I tested about a dozen times and every other dismiss worked fine. Hope 8.1 fixes the issue for everyone.

Seems to have been fixed for me in WatchOS 8.1, as well. Still careful, though. :)

8.1 is still not quite right IMHO. Better than 8.0, but still gotta hit the button just right.
I agree. It doesn't trigger the underlying auto-reply anymore, but the Dismiss button doesn't respond like it used to. It used to look like you had pressed a button and reacted like a "button." Sloppy update. As you say, "not quite right."
