I've been running watchOS 3 since GM came out. Loving it, but every now and then it vibrates and does the Apple Pay ping sound, but screen doesn't light up and no notifications. Cannot work out what's going on.

Any ideas? Or anyone running the beta know why it's doing it?

I made a thread about this yesterday. I get a strange chime with nothing happening on my watch. Happenening since last two betas

Sorry, I did do a search but it didn't come up. Mods feel free to merge.

The chime is the Apple Pay noise. If you use Apple Pay on your phone and use a finger not registered it makes the same sound.

Yep same here, but I traced it to notifications on my iPhone with iOS 10. There are minor notifications, like how many minutes to home, where I parked my car and such which chime and shake the watch but don't seem to show on the watch face.

If you trigger Apple Pay with the side button, and then put your wrist down it will time out and give a vibe and chime. Not sure if this is your issue, but this caught me off guard yesterday.

Thanks. I did suspect that, but I know that the screen is on with that until it makes the noise.

This is not that, as my screen is definitely not on before it happens.

Also, it's never happened until iOS 10 and I got the watch when it was first launched. The mystery continues.

I've not got those minor notifications. Not sure what it is.

Hmm. Just happened again. No screen on. Wasn't the Apple Pay fail chime though. No notifications on my phone either.

Also, my watch is always set to silent, which makes it more puzzling.

Also had this a couple of times on new series 2 watch. I don't remember getting it on my series 0. I think there are still some notification bugs in watchOS 3.0. Some of my email notifications are giving no 'ding' or haptic feedback on the watch, even though the red dot appears on the watch and the emails are there when you slide the display down. Also had just the haptic feedback without the sound a few times, but was also getting that on my old watch.

So you actually have been one of the first to get watch 2, how does it compare to 0?

  1. Is the screen really that much brighter?
  2. Can you tell it's faster?
  3. Anything else you like better?
Thanks!

It doesn't look much brighter indoors but it's definitely more visible out in the sun. As for speed, I really notice the difference when opening apps for the first time.

I've only had it for 24 hours so haven't really had time to compare other features with the series 0...

Thanks I might get one and give my 0 to a family member. I would like to explore programming the GPS for an app I'm prepping.

Oh and I got some of those os3 pings and haptic; they were from the breath app, stand app, and some other app I never opened. It seems there is a built in health emphasis in the new OS.

Maybe it's the breathe one for me, but that only goes off once a day and sits in notifications, where as the phantom pings are few times a day and no notifications

Has anyone found anything online that definitively identifies the cause of the random/ phantom vibrating? I bought an apple watch at launch (S0 Sport) and never had a problem with it vibrating randomly. I recently bought a Stainless Steel replacement, and this thing constantly vibrates (set to silent mode) randomly for apparently non reason. No notifications on my phone or watch anywhere. I'd guess it happens 2-3 times a day on average. I haven't tried a reset yet, but I'm hoping that will help.

If you inadvertently double tap the bottom button to activate ApplePay and just leave it there, the watch will vibrate and ping, once the screen goes back to sleep. It happens to be once or twice a week.

I tried activating Apple Pay & leaving it just to see what happens. The screen is active, shows the Apple Pay instructions and it pings as well as vibrates.

Unfortunately, this doesn't explain my problem. My watch face never shows anything on the screen when it vibrates randomly. There is also no ping sound, just the vibration. This isn't my problem. Thanks though.

Someone mentioned in another thread that the same thing happened on their phone and attributed it to the iOS stock mail app for phantom vibrations on their iPhone...I too receive them. I just attribute it to the same thing happening on my Apple Watch.

Just to update: I did a reset & re-pairing of my watch & I stopped having the issue. I'm assuming at least in my case, something was goofed up in the initial firmware update/ pairing from when I set up the new watch. I've also updated to WatchOS 3.1.3 and have not had a problem with that OS either.
