Hey together,

all clear: The Mic of my Apple Watch works fine now. Maybe a bug after updating to 1.0.1. I restarted my watch and now everything is fine. No damage from Gold Plating.

Thanks for your help!

BR,
Marco

Unless you specifically signed off that you knew this process would potentially void your warranty, you might have a case against watch plate for damage to your watch. Looking at their order form, I didn't see any explicit warnings or checkboxes indicating a legal waiver of your rights. You may be able to use this loophole to your advantage.

When you purchased AC+, you agreed to the terms and conditions that aftermarket modifications would void it. I'm sure this is also stated in the standard warranty. Nice try though.

I think the user was talking about Watchplate and not Apple but I can be wrong.

Anyone with US warranty concerns should definitely get familiar with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It basically says that the manufacturer is obligated to prove that the modification is related to the defect. It's a big deal for aftermarket car parts. One example is that the car dealer can't void your warranty when your transmission fails after you installed new wiper blades. In this case, Apple would have to prove (not just speculate) that the gold-plating is the cause of the problem. Too bad Apple would likely just replace the broken/defective watch rather than actually fix it and give back your original watch. It's almost the same scenario people were in back when iPods and iPads were getting custom engravings.

Bottom line: You're not voiding your warranty unless Apple can prove the gold-plating caused the problem. You'll almost certainly get a replacement watch rather than have it repaired if you make a warranty claim. It's still way cheaper than an actual solid gold Edition watch.

Except that AppleCare+ is not a warranty, so this wouldn't apply. It is a "protection plan". Apple made sure to write all the documentation just right in order to avoid any warranty laws/rules/etc. (I used to work for Apple, we were told that if a customer referred to it as a warranty that we had to correct them and call it a "protection plan.")

It doesn't matter because Watchplate doesn't warranty it.

Nope they sure do not.

Regardless, you're on your own if you decide to gold plate. As the user above mentioned, don't get all scummy because no one forced you to gold plate your apple watch :).

I forgot to come back and post photos of my sport band, which arrived a few days after my Milanese. I didn't have time to stage more professional photos this time, so here are just a couple from my phone.

Hi Guys,

I was one of the first customers that opted to try out the new gold plating service that user RianFlynn started. The website is www.watchplate.com. His original post can be viewed here. After his post, he got bombarded with orders and interview requests. But throughout the process he was very informative and kept me up to date. I am sure this will change once his orders increase, the last figure he told me was that he had 100 watch orders. When I first made my order, I was skeptical and worried. But with research and his responses to my questions, it allowed me to feel at ease with his process and final product.

My first issue, and it seems like the biggest concern to most people, was how long the plating will last. Watch Plate does give a replating within the first 30 days, and then charges a flat $199 after the 30 days. I did not want to have to pay an extra $199 to have it replated 5-6 months down the line. What I found was that you wear away 1 micron of gold ever 2 years. Watch Plate puts on 35 microns of gold. That’s 70 years!! Rings and necklaces where you usually see tarnishing and wear only get around .5 microns. Obviously it can last longer with great care.

My second issue was that this was a brand new business. He has experience electroplating fenders and guitars, but jewelry was a new venture. But his willingness to involve me in the process was more than enough to make me realize that he wants to make the perfect item. He has hired a team to perfect the gold, upgraded his equipment so that he could meet his 3 day turnaround, and even kept me up to date for some delays. Just from what he told me, it seemed like a delay was inevitable. It seems like he was expecting to do maybe 1-2 watches a day, instead of the 100 orders he got in the last week. While he may be new to the jewelry business, he is not a new businessman. With his upgrades, he should have no problem fulfilling his orders. I believe he told me his machine can now do 15-20 watches at a time.

My last issue was that the photos on his website seemed to be a bit blurry. I kind of wanted to see how the watch looked in person before ordering. Obviously that is not possible. This is the risk I took of being his first batch of orders. (I was actually order #10) They were actually having a photo shoot the day I got my watch, so new high res photos should be up pretty soon. Along with a shot of the new the Rose Color.

When my watch finally came, I was blown away. It was even better than I had imagined. The BSB works perfectly along side the gold plating. One issue that I had was the digital crown when I first turned it. It stuck a little, but after a few turns, it smoothened out. I don’t know if mine happened to be subject to the sticky digital crown that everyone else is having, but it has not stuck since I first turned it.

In my opinion, Watch Plate is a great option to have that high class look without the price. I own 3 Rolex’s so price was not the issue. I could not justify paying $10,000+ for a watch that might depreciate by a few thousand once the new version comes out. So Watch Plate was the prefect median for me. And its not like its fake spray gold, this is REAL 24k gold they are putting on the watch.

If you guys have any questions or would like a better photo of a different angle, ill try to upload them when I can.

I would to hear your opinion now. My Apple Watch was plated by them in June. All the plating has completely worn off the back of the watch. I have read they are not answering their phones now and are overwhelmed with complaints. I'm so disappointed as it looked so nice when I got it but it's an embarrassment now. As the wear is now visible on the sides of the watch. Same is happening to the band. Buyer beware. Google "watch plate repair"
To see what going on. You can't even find contact information for them on their website anymore.

Mine hasnt really been coming off. Ive used it for about 2 months when I got it with an ArmorShield and the rest without it. I dont know if they have tried to streamline the process to make more bulk orders so the quality might have dropped. Like I said, mine was #10 that they processed so they mightve put more work into it.

Wow that is disappointing to hear. They never quite got into the swing of things, it sounds like. Early on it was hard to reach them and they blamed it on growth, I wonder what their excuse is now.

I was order #13. The back of my watch around the sensor has partially faded. The inside of the milanese band has partially faded, and the pin of the sport band (inside) has completely faded.

Nothing outward facing is yet visible as fading, and I wear it every day. Still, the shelf life of this treatment is clearly on the order of months, which just doesn't match up with the expected results reported by other companies for plated jewelry. Not sure what the story is that explains it, but yeah definitely a buyer beware sort of thing. It will look solid as hell for a couple months, but don't expect that to last past 6 months.

You can pretty much rub the coating off if you are not happy with the faded look... Get a microfiber cloth and just go to town for an hour.

Would probably have been smart of them to put a "coating may wear off over time" disclaimer, and charge a nominal fee to re-plate it annually

It has not held up very well. When it is on my wrist it looks fine, but the whole underside is half silver and looks dreadful. Signs of wear appeared within 6 months. Not sure I'd do this again.

Any current pictures you can post? When I heard first of the plating process, I knew it would be a failure for Those who did this. No offense to you, but I'm sure lesson learned with your investment and the cost to plate the Apple Watch.
