For those that want to cut to the chase, here's my dilemma:

My jailbroken iphone 3g (16gb) got water damaged last night. I tried to turn it on and off a couple times and now it doesn't work at all. I've heard that apple may offer a refurb iphone for $199 to replace the water damaged one. I'm worried about bringing in my phone for this, though, because of the jailbreak. Even though the phone is dead now, I'm worried that I'll get the refurb one and while they are looking at my phone at the factory or whatever they get it to work or something and see the jailbreak and come back after me. I can't just unjailbreak before I go, because I can't get it to turn on to restore it. Should I be worried about the jailbreak, or just bring it in or what? Has anyone brought a dead jailbroken (not restored/unjailbroken) phone into apple for repair of any kind? Did it work out ok? Also, does anyone have a guess as to what might happen if somehow they get the phone to turn on (even in some limited state) when I go there, and they see that it's jailbroken?

Here's the rest of the story:

Last night I spilled beer on my pants, some of which got on my pocket where my phone was. It was only damp, so I didn't think much of it - just let it dry. Later in the night I went to check my phone and it was showing a fading/flickering screen. It wasn't wet or anything so I didn't think much of it and wasn't even sure that water was the problem. I tried to get it to work right for a few minutes before it stopped showing the fading and flickering and went all white. I tried to restart it and eventually got to the point that it was all black and wouldn't turn on or do anything. I'm assuming I probably fried it.

I guess the moisture from a wet pocket somehow found it's way into the phone and me playing with it screwed it up. I know I shouldn't have turned it on or tried to use it, but it's too late now.

I've been drying the phone all morning with a hairdryer and I'm going to put it in a rice bag for a while before I bring it to apple, but so far it's not looking promising - it still won't turn on after an hour or so of being in front of a hairdryer on low heat.

Jailbreaking isn't a crime. No one is coming after you. All jailbreaking does is void your warranty, but you already did that with the beer.

Take the phone and get a new one, if you can. Not sure of any exchange policy as you mention.

The policy I was reading about is the out of warranty service (http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/#warranty7) which specifically states liquid damage as one of the out of warranty service scenarios. I think it's still up to the particular genius to determine if it's OOW or not, but if all goes well, a water damaged iphone could be replaced for $199. I was just concerned about the jailbreak, if that somehow voids the possibility for the out of warranty service (if they find out about it), even if the damage is clearly from liquid and not from the jailbreak.

Restore your phone and take it in. You can undo jailbreaking but you can't really undo water damage.

    there not going to bother

coming after you Steve Jobs is not sending Apple henchmen after you as was posted you already voided the warranty spilling the beer on it. I doubt once it's turned in it will be turned on. parts stripped out and replaced maybe. if you that worried drop the iphone in a glass of water and finish the job. just be sure before you do that they will replace it for you.

    I completely glossed over that.
Well, then the warranty is definitely void anyway so what's there to lose?

Rest assured, a jailbroken phone doesn't suddenly leak you know? It is not like they can say jailbreaking the phone caused it to be damaged by water. Right?

    ????

    +1

If it won't turn on, it's toast, why do you think they will do a forensic investigation on the phone. Besides that, once you have a new phone, who cares. If you are really worried just follow this suggestion....

Now this is a classic response.... I love it !!
