You can take it out like this: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Unibody+Model+A1342+Hard+Drive+Replacement/1670 Then insert it in another computer or use a SATA to usb adapter to see if the data is still there.

Click to expand... On her model the HD is in the battery compartment. Hopefully the HD can be restored to the MacBook Air.
