I currently use iPhone7. I have used Galaxy S5 before.

It's been two months for iPhone and it's water damaged. The damange is not done by immersing it in a bucket full of water, or a swimming pool or a pond, the damage is caused merely by clicking few snaps and making few calls while it was raining. Yes, while it was raining and that too not heavily.

As per Apple, iPhone7 is not waterproof, it's water resistant. Which means it can easily take on the rains. It's a false claim.

The service center people as well were least concerned about the fact that their product failed. They refused to believe that it's only because of rains. They assumed I am lying and said the only option is to get it replaced for Rs 28,400.

WHEREAS

My Samsung Galaxy S5 works till date just fine. S5 on the other hand was used inside swimming pool and even at a beach under water. It worked absolutely fine every single time.

CONCLUSION

If a company advertises the product incorrectly and it's truly not reliable, there is no point going for it. It's just a show-off thing with too many restrictions. Utter waste of money. Absolute rubbish!

At least you know the difference between water-resistant and water-proof.

Apple must have a threshold where if water damage occurs, in their experience, it very likely means it was exposed to more than just 'rain'. Doesn't mean you're lying but you'll have a hard time convincing them otherwise.

Thank you for your reply.
Despite of immersing phone in water completely many people would claim that they just spilled water on it. So, i understand people to not believe me.
But, honestly, it was just rains and few photographs. It was not completely immersed in water even for a second.
The problem here is I had really high expectations from apple's quality and support, and both failed me.

The resistance is tested in ideal conditions. Rain isn't predictable and will affect things. For the most part I'd not let water hit my phone intentionally at all, despite the claims.

You may have not used the Samsung phones. They are seriously waterproof. I had taken my S5 in swimming pool and even under the water at beaches, it works fine till date.
I knew iPhone 7 is not water proof and just water resistant, so I have always been careful to not let water cross it. But if it cannot withstand mild rains, then something is seriously wrong. Either it's just my piece that's defective or the entire series of these phones.
In any case, it's no match with way too old S5 in terms of hardware.

I wonder whether there is any possibility that not every iphone has the same quality of water proofing applied when it comes off the production line. Some people are saying that they have submerged their 7's for minutes at a time in 1m of water and others have claimed a light rain caused issues.

The problem (as the OP suggests) is that unless you claim a ridiculous waterproofing depth and can offer that, giving warranty replacements for water damage would be a free licence for people to kill their phones with water and get a new one for free. Pretty sure no company will give warranty replacements for water damage for this reason.

I also have seen videos where people are taking iPhone7 in pools and ponds and it still works.
I am not that big of a risk taker. I purchased this phone on installments and more than 80% payment is still pending that now I have to pay anyway.
The point is, if a company claims the phone to be water-resistant, it should be water-resistant atleast.
I would not make it a big issue and post about how much I hate Apple now if I genuinely had exhausted the capacity of it's water-resistance. Truth is, it was just used in rains, and this is expected from the phone.

Oh I totally agree, the problem is that its not something that can be proven either way.

It seems to be hit or miss.

I've known people who take showers with a bare 7 and others who go swimming and it survives.

I've also seen threads like this where a splash of water kills the phone.

Hope I'm one of the lucky ones!

It's not fake, however you may have a faulty unit? My iPhone 7 Plus has withheld use in the rain, it is water resistant and NOT waterproof, Apple does state in it's website that over time certain things may cause it to become less water resistant.

Different phone, but my 6s Plus took a plunge into a hot bath once for 1-2seconds. Still works fine without any issues to this date!

Hope yours works fine.
But I am never buying an apple product again.
They gave me worse customer service today.

How can I know if it's faulty unit or how can I prove this to Apple?
Service center guys were firm on the part where they said warranty is void and the cost will be the said amt.
They didn't give any other optimistic option.

I wish I had purchased 6s. At-least I would not take it out in the rains.

I know difference between water resistance and water proof.
It was minor spills not immersion in water as I mentioned.
I did not charge it for more than 12 hours after it was taken out in the rain.

I've seen a few people posting their iPhone 7 getting damaged coming in contact with water even when it's not submerged. There might be some faulty units out there. The problem is, once it happens to your phone, how do you prove that it was faulty from before unless you have a video or something similar to support your claim.

The spec says the iPhone 7 is IP67 rated. Same as the original Apple Watch. What I find odd is how warranty service can be denied if there is water damage.

I myself used an original Apple Watch for a lot of swimming without issue. And I've also use my iPhone 7 Plus for a lot of photos and videos in water/pools. I never submersed it very deep, nor did I keep it submersed for more than a few seconds during a video or photo. But seeing so many people have issues from water submersion I've become more hesitant to do that.

The Series 2 Watch is IP68 rated and I've done a lot of swimming with it. I wonder if future iPhones will get IP68 ratings.

I dropped my 7+ down the toilet. Picked it out washed it under the tap and carried on using it as normal

Apple Support in India is no match of Apple Support here in UK or other countries. You don’t have actual Apple Stores in India, just Apple Authorized retailers and service providers, who usually offer inferior service compared to real Apple Stores. I hope Apple opens their own stores and offer Genius Bar appointments, they’re more understanding in most cases.

I didn’t have any issues with my iPhone 7, it rains quite a lot here and I’ve used it in mild rain one or two times so far with no issues. It could be your unit was defective, or became defective over use, and the water was allowed to go inside and damage the phone.

I don’t really use my phone in rains much, it’s rare. I have AirPods and S2 Watch which offer proper water proofing so don’t need to pull out the phone.

I personally think that the responsible thing for these companies to do is make no mention of resistance at all if they’re just going to reserve the right to deny any water claims anyway.

That’s my opinion, I’ve let it be known before, and plenty disagreed, which is fine. I just don’t think the burden of proof in a warranty claim should ever be in the consumer. If the excuse is “we don’t know you didn’t purposely damage it”, then the claim shouldn’t even be made.

Agree with @ssrij, if the country you live in doesn't have Apple Stores, usually we won't get the same quality of service & support like those who have.

For example, reading from the forum here, I heard that people can just swap their iPhone's leather cases with the new one when they find out that the leather case gets dirty fast. Tried that, no luck here in New Zealand. Not possible.

I just never use any of my expensive electronic devices in the rain or near water... Why take a chance, at least that's my philosophy. Things are water resistant until they aren't. Unless you can figure out a way to pressure test a phone like a watch you're pretty much taking a chance. Dive watches are recommended to be tested every 1-2 years to ensure water resistance..

IP67 rating:

The number 6 is for total protection against dust. The second number of the IP rating system refers to protection against liquids. ... Most environmentally sealed Pocket PCs are rated IP67. They are protected from dust and capable of withstanding water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for 30 minutes.

Clearly not the case here. What concerns me is that they question the validity of person's claim based on the story they present to Apple as to how the device was damaged by water?

If they were to abide by the rating they advertise for their product they should be asking a customer only two questions:

1: Was the device submerged for longer than 30 minutes?

2: How deep was the water?

Period.

The Airpods do not have a water resistance rating at all. There have been many cases where the Airpods have failed in the rain for some using them in those conditions. But the Series 2 does have a 50 Meter water resistance rating.

The questionaire at the start of this thread needs another response option for those who haven't tested the water resistance feature on the IP7. Sure, I've had a couple of drops on the phone, but never had it in rain or submerged it. Then again, I've had a few drops hit every IP I've had since the "3G" and I've had them all.
