I have recently been given my partners Apple Watch and noticed some stains on the screen, I looks like maybe a tea/Coke stain. It can’t been seen inside or when the screen is turned on but only outside in natural light when the screen is black.

It’s not a major problem but does anyone have any thoughts of how I could remove
Then.

It’s hard to photograph but i have done my best

The glass material itself shouldn't really stain so the question is why can't you simply rub those off with a lint free cloth and possibly moisten it a little if its something stubborn?

If it won'y come off then I would be a little suspicious that the marks were inside the display and water marks there are a likely precursor to failure. If the unit is under AppleCare and the marks are inside the display I would appeal to Apple saying you believe the integrity of the case is compromised and likely to fail if you took a swim with it.

Try is slightly damp microfiber cloth, and if you have a _very_ minimal amount of isopropyl alcohol and determine if that removes it. If it doesn’t remove it, then it’s either underneath the glass or stained the glass.

It could be the glue that sticks the glass to the screen! Take it to a non-genius Genius and ask them what their robotic opinion is.

Looks like a solvent of some type may have removed part of the oleophobic coating. See Relentless Power 's post to correct. Just keep in mind it may take a few attempts to completely remove.

I would not use alcohol unless you do not care about removing the oleophobic coating...

Read Apple's guidelines https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204522 and https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207123. Alcohol is only suggested on the aluminum casing for older model phones, never on the glass surfaces with a coating.

But that is the WHOLE point. If the coating is already spotted/damaged it is better to remove it and the spots. It is the ONLY thing you can do to remove the spots if it is the oleophobic coating. You can easily reapply another oleophobic coating using a kit or just use without. The oleophobic coating wears off anyway and after a year or 2 it is usually mostly gone anyway.

At this point, the oleophobic coating is already damaged as it is. Something came into interaction with it and caused to ‘Stain’ in some form. Isopropyl alcohol would be the only real solution that would remove it, and just keep in mind, the oleophobic coating as it is might have already been dissipated or wears off naturally over the course of time with usage.

I have a series 3 with the same issue!

Apple took it for a week (that's brutal for a ring filling fanatic), sent it away and then gave it back to me saying it is just cosmetic and they wouldn't replace it. This after the in store genius recognized seeing what I was seeing and saying it was weird.

Seeing another post like this means it is an issue. I'm calling them again and seeing if they will actually own this issue. Anyone else seeing this?

Give Apple a kick up the ass. This is poor quality control and customer service. Hubris

Seriously, it's silly. A $700 watch shouldn't do that. I've owned every generation Stainless Steel and this has never happened before.

To the OP, you should take it into the Apple Store if you're able to. As for me, I am going to call Apple Support and continue the case with them.

I'll update here.

Anyone else with the issue, let me know.

Did Apple give you a detailed explanation of what they mean by cosmetic and what’s causing the reaction with the staining on the display? They should at least explain to you more in detail why they are choosing not to replace your Apple Watch.

Also, it’s at your own risk of course, but you could certainly try the method that I suggested above if they choose _not_ to replace your Apple Watch with some isopropyl alcohol minimally And a microfiber cloth slightly damp and see if that removes the stains.

Hi, nope. They gave almost no explanation. They tried using an alcohol wipe in the store. I'm literally on a call waiting to speak with a senior adviser now. I'll keep you all updated. Here's a photo of the issue.

That’s completely unacceptable. Apple should absolutely replace that watch. Sapphire does not stain like that.

I agree, it’s troubling for sure.

They elevated it to the next level. And said they would “make a one-time exception.“ So I have to send the watch in and it appears that they’re going to replace it, probably with a refurbished unit.

It may _not_ be exactly the Sapphire display that is stained, it’s a reaction with the Oleophobic coating causing to malform. This isn’t the first time someone has had this issue. For example, sometimes chlorine from pools can have a reaction with the Oleophobic causing a reaction to have ‘Staining.’
