Almost none. Back in the 3GS days, the way to tell the difference was looking at the bottom silver lining. If it was strong and silver, it was a 3GS. If it was dull and grayish it was a 3G.

I think he means judging only on external appearance. I suppose maybe the camera lens may look different. Can't really think of anything else. If it has the 4 antenna breaks and is on AT&T, that's another way to tell.
 
3G to 3GS difference was on the back. Code A12 was 3G and A13 was 3GS. Didn't need to turn on the phone or whatnot.
