My dad has the iPad 3 with LTE on Verizon. Yesterday he got an email stating he was over his 2GB limit for the month, with 13 days still left in the monthly billing cycle.

Now this isn't a HUGE deal since VZW just adds another 2GB to the account for $10 once he goes over his limit...but still something seems wrong.

I tried troubleshooting with him and he doesn't stream Pandora or Netflix or anything like that, just 20-30 minutes a day of basic web browsing. Email is synced, but no Facebook or other social networking.

He never uses WiFi which I told him to start doing, but still...is there anything else iPad 3 owners have noticed that could be using so much data?

It's the basic internet browsing. What sites is he using? If he uses an equivalent application instead, that'd help a lot. Like instead of loading up CNN, The New York Times, etc, he could use a RSS reader or something like Flipboard, Pulse. They'll take a lot of data with the images, but it's heaps better than having to load javascript, and other unneeded images on every single load of a page.

Either that or try and see if you can find an alternative browser that does caching better than Safari.

Is someone emailing him huge attachments like lemon party photos or videos? Check his emails for large attachments... carefully.

Some media apps auto-detect your connection and optimize the video and/or audio bit rate accordingly. YouTube is known to be a hog when on LTE, opting for 720/1080HD instead of 360/480. Netflix and Pandora may be doing the same thing.

Make sure he gets into the habit of saving media apps for WiFi, anything else can be done on Cellular. I have a 2GB plan on my iPhone and I never hit my limit and I just browse web sites, upload about 15 pictures a month to Facebook and about 1 or 2 youtube videos a month while on break at work. But I try to bookmark those videos and save them for home or for WiFi.

His dad is definitely streaming a lot of porn, I don't see much else that can hog up data. Avg porn scene is about 20+ mins.. Hmm
