Hi,

So we know that with IOS12 you’ll be able to have Waze, Google Maps and others available in CarPlay.

How will this work? Is it a case of update your iPhone to IOS12 and their wait for the relevant app to be updated or should this work as soon as you have IOS12?

Is anyone out there already having Waze, Google Maps running on your CarPlay system with the beta version of iOS12?

Thanks, Ian.

We will have to wait till iOS 12 is released. Currently google maps doesn’t work with car play, under iOS 12 beta. As the app google maps, waze will have to be updated too.

Apple will allow developers to release App Store versions of their apps with iOS 12 specific features very soon. Until then, these only exist as pre-release developer apps. Some out there are currently testing betas of these apps.

I am a waze beta tester and we do not have CarPlay support yet. Per the message we received it may be going straight to public release and is coming very soon and should be available near launch. I would expect to see it next week or the following at the latest.

Not very good in my opinion. The normal view looks a lot like Apple maps but it doesn't even have the 3D buildings. The satellite view is much better but the resolution is not high and the screen redraw makes it hard to read the street names. Also, I have an Audi without touch screen so zooming, moving and basically doing anything is slow and difficult. It takes too many clicks just to zoom or to find a destination.
Maybe I am biased because my car already has Google Maps navigation built-in, which looks much much better than the CarPlay version.

I think it's fantastic (Google Maps). All my hundreds of saved locations are in my car now & are understood when I request them by voice, unlike Siri who can't comprehend what I'm saying much of the time.

It'll get better over time. In fact I think I noticed some tweaks already, from yesterday to today...just can't recall them right now

If I remember right, the developers conference that detailed the then upcoming release of third party Navigation Apps on CarPlay, there's a basic template UI that Navigation developers need to follow which will make them look similar in many respects.

This is just on the surface though of course. But the features/settings of the mobile Apps will split them apart.

My favorite thing about Google (as a mostly Windows user), if I have to go to a location I have never been, I just look it up in Google Maps, then send it to my phone, when I hook up Car Play, I am ready to go.

Does anyone know if there is a way to force Night mode for Google Maps in CarPlay?

In my car I find the bright Day screen distracting and in my field of vision and I much prefer running the black Night mode all the time. But my BMW keeps reverting to day mode during the day even when I set the Google Maps app to be in night mode all the time.

Have you tried the setting in the app?

Yes, as I wrote in my post. The issue is that it doesn’t appear that way in CarPlay even when Night mode is selected in the app. I want the black screen all the time.

For Waze -
How do I get the top “search” bar to disappear?

I have a black bar on the top that won’t go away when I’m using the Waze App. Any advice?

I've found that it just goes away on it's own. Definitely disappears when a route has been plotted, but doesn't go away when you tap the screen like Apple Maps.

Patience, BJ. Sounds like a bug in CarPlay...at this point in time. Expect it to be addressed soonish.
