SO I have a basically brand new WD external hard drive and everytime I try to back up with time machine it backs up for about 2 minutes and then the HDD disconnects from the computer..

I try with the WD software to backup as well and it keeps disconnecting..

Anyone have any solutions?

Which model of WD drive? The World Edition (network) drive needs a firmware update to be compatible with Time Machine, if that's the one you own:

It's also possible that you got a bum drive (or a bum cable, though that's unlikely), since it's brand new. Try manually copying a bunch of data to it and see if it spontaneously disconnects; if so, it's probably the drive--try another cable to be sure, and if it still doesn't work call WD tech support and see if they can help and/or replace it.

It is a my passort 1 TB usb 3.0

it seems like it is just ejecting its self..

many time this notice comes up when plugged in:

wd 0740 is in use and cannot be powered off right now

I am currently transferring a large file there as a test and it is currently at 20 gigs with no problem.. much longer that it has last before when trying to back up.. so it doesnt look like a disk problem.

So after some research I read to uninstall the WD smart software.. Once I did Time Machine worked like a charm!
