overheating

I just put this drive in my Macbook Pro 15" (2006) and it is overheating like crazy (unbelievably hot and smelling something electrical). This is my first install of a HD. I'm going to take it apart again and try to boot from it via USB and see if it overheats in that context.

Any recommendations on troubleshooting a bad connection or something I did in the install? (followed instructions on iFixit)

Think its a bad drive?

Sounds like it, that's not something I've experienced and I've been running this pretty hard over the past couple weeks.

didn't last 4 months in a mac mini

I put one of these into my in-laws Mac Mini back last Christmas. By April the machine wouldn't reboot. This in a very low-use situation, just boots itself in the morning and drops into standby for most of the day. Well ventilated location and powered through a UPS. Drive reports being unrepairable by fsck_hfs and Drive Utility won't even try. So much for 'upgrading' them. No idea why it died. Sure, warranty will cover it but I'm not risking this one again. I'll re-use the drive in something else (that's not 400 miles away at the folks house).

So now I'm wondering what other make/model of 400-600gb drive to put in its place?

I have it, it's very good but a bit noisy and I had to use HDAPM to sort out the constant stuttering. Honestly, I'd go for the Hitachi equivalent if I were to do it again.

Battery life seems to be unaffected too as a bonus.

x2 - I had one of these and also tried the 640gb but both were noisy. I ended up using a very quiet TOSHIBA MK5055GSX.
