If they wanted to delay activations server load, they would give it to you a day later faster than they would give it to you early.

Actually a day later would cause as much of a PR problem as any activation problems would, or more. However, with them letting deliveries happen a day early by turning a blind eye towards early deliveries, they do 2 things: 1, spread out the activations without pissing off hundreds of thousands who were promised delivery by the 24th and 2, they keep the plausible deniability by not officially changing the release date, thereby not pissing off all the retail and att.com orderers.

If Apple decided that after last week to try and avoid more ATT server problems and PR problems, there would only be one thing they could possibly do under their sole control and minimize pissing off everyone who preordered.
No other option could be executed as easily and effectively with little to no collateral damage as letting them get delivered a day early.

All of that supposed that Apple would actually try and minimize activation problems and avoid more bad press in the same week. Although, last week's preorder issues and all of the canceling of orders throughout the weekend with no customer contact says that they might not be interested in minimizing problems and avoiding bad PR.

Why don't people realize that the phones are already mostly activated? You just have to plug it into itunes to finish it. It's not much data transfer, way less than the preordering which required at least 3 requests in and out of AT&T's servers. This is just one. It won't be bad.

It would make wayyyyyy too much sense to send 1/2 on the 23rd and the rest on the 24th. You definitely want 600,000 phones trying to activate in a 12 hour time frame. Apple is will prepared to handle that level of server load.

RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was 600,000 spread across all of the countries that were able to preorder on the 15th. Not only that, but even if it was in the US, it's more like a 17 hour window. Then you have people that won't activate for various reasons (will do it the next morning, away on a trip or business, etc). It's actually a much larger window than 12 hours.
But I'm sure there will still be problems.

OR, Apple could...

June 24: 1/4 iPhone pre-orders ship + others bought in store.
June 25: Another 1/4 shipped + others bought in store.
June 26: Same as June 25.
June 27: All pre-orders shipped.
June 28: Apple continues normal schedule.

Ya, know..If your concerned about the activation.

I think doing something like that would be cool, but anyone who wasn't able to get their phone and have it activated on day 1 would say it's not fair. Let's not forget it wasn't that long ago we had to wait in line for gas, and you could only go on certain days....

If the servers were able to handle it all at once it wouldn't be such a big deal. But I think a 2 or 3 day activation roll out would be cool.

some people got their iPad the day before they were meant to get it.....

they might not have had any reason to be concerned about the load until the preorder fiasco happened. They and ATT both at the time said that it exceeded what they expected. At that point the only option to avoid the potential a activation fiasco would be to let some arrive early rather than having fedex hold them. Your solution, after the preorders of last week would be all over the news and seen as a failure on top of last week. Letting em activate early avoids that as much as possible.

It would even generate some positive press. You know it would be on the news. "Some people got their new iPhones a day ahead of time" and they would have some cute random footage of little kids and cell phones. Now back to the war(s) in the Middle East!

To avoid all the activations in one day..maybe? U guys all know wat happens if we all try to do it at the Same time

I made a thread about getting on 23rd to avoid activation issues. By most of people in the thread thought I was wrong and thought I was saying I'm entitled to a early activation.

A lot of people around here seem to confuse speculation with a sense of self entitlement.

Shipping some units a day early IS a good idea, no matter how you look at it. I don't think it will happen, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Being that Apple releases multiple products every year now and never releases anything early my bet is that no one is getting the iphone early either. I was sitting right here reading these forums last year and it was the same deal. There were loads of people thinking they would get their phones a day early because of the tracking. You know how many people got theirs early on these boards? --> 0
