Will it ever happen? Typing this from my iPad mini 4 the mini is the perfect “lazy on the couch want something a little bigger than your phone device”. My mini 4 stutters a bit in the Best Buy app and doing some other things. We need a 5!

A country where a schizophrenic has ruled
    Yes and yes.
I have been waiting for 4 years.
But I don’t think it will happen anyway.

I definitely want an ipad mini 5, the size is in that "just right" area for productivity, portability and occasional media consumption, making it about the same size device as the current mini 4 but edge-2-edge would be very nice.

Aren’t there a lot of these threads? But yes, I want one too.

But Mini 4 isn’t even 3 years old yet. It came out sept 2015.

    On the silver scream
If it comes with pencil compatibility, and the screen was the same or better as the 4, yes please.

I’ll only be buying another iPad if it’s an updated Mini so I’m probably out of luck. I’ve started some tentative research on smaller Android tablets with this in mind. I see so many comments on here along the lines of “I want a new Mini but if Apple don’t release one I’ll just buy the latest Pro”. If I were an Apple exec reading that I’d know not updating is the right choice.

I’ve been an Apple user for the last 20 years but in the last year or so my eye has started to wander. No new MBA 11”, if the rumours are true no new smaller iPhone, no new Mini. These things combined with Apple’s build quality of late (MBP keyboard) it makes me think I might end up jumping ship completely. I’d have thought that unthinkable a few years ago.

I agree, every time I pick up my wife's iPad Pro, I say to myself, wow, this is so friggin heavy. I love my mini. It's perfect. Perfect size, perfect weight, perfect. No large phone or full-sized tablet fits that right in-between need.

Although I use a mini 4 for my casual browsing and reading, I'm still impressed by how lightweight the 9.7" and 10.5" Pros feel. The 12.9" is a different story though.

An X style update to the mini would be amazing. Though I don't see it happening unfortunately.

If apple released an ipad mini with reduced bezels and an increased screen from 7.9” to 8.5” and with pencil support....wow. That would be the ultimate portable ipad.

So true. I don’t want to buy a bigger iPad because it will be affirming Apple for their decision using the only language they really hear: $$. I’d rather buy a competitor’s small tablet or do without—or if I really have to, buy a bigger iPad used so at least my money doesn’t go directly to Apple.

Sounds like an old prototype from 2015/2016. I can't imagine an iPad mini 5 with an A9 when we're weeks away from A12.

I think we'll see one in the form of iPhone X++

    Should start around $1499*

*(for one with 32GB of storage - lmfao - this company...man)

Let’s get real. No one wants a mini. Logically, it’s not coming back along with the MacBook Air and the Mac mini. Get over it. People with plus size phones don’t even use their minis. I have a mini 4 and a 10.5 and I have only used my mini once in the last year looking up something when my pro died. I could have easily used my Mac but was lazy and it was sitting there. If you want a mini, get the new 6.5 iPhone and call it a day.

So you have a phone, an iPad and an iPad pro 10.5. I have a 13" MacBook Pro, an iPhone 6s and an iPad mini 4 and I use all three extensively at home and while travelling for work. Work (mainly writing scientific papers including figures) is done on the MacBook when on location, on the mini in its Zagg case with keyboard while travelling, and the latter also serves as my Kindle/music/e-mail device at home and while travelling. Easy to use in planes and trains and airport lounges (I have a SIM card/LTE version). I cannot write papers on an iPhone, even a 6.5 inch, and cannot always connect to the internet on the MacBook. In fact I would prefer to have a smaller phone, and definitely not a larger one. The difference in size between the mini and the 10.5 is considerable in practice - taking the mini out of its case I can fit it into a pocket on my normal travel trousers (cargo pants) or a jacket, not possible with the 10.5.

So for you to declare that there is no need or demand for a mini, means you do not need one, but others, and judging bu the message boards, not just a few, do see a need.

Anybody that says ‘just get the plus phone’ has never put them side by side or even considered the difference aspect ratio makes. They can only focus on the screen size, which is not a proper representation of what is displayed on the screen.

I have no problem with ‘there’s no demand for the product anymore’ argument, but stating that the substitute to the mini is a phone that costs 3x as much with half the screen real estate (yes even with the new 6.5” one coming), is just wrong.

The closest substitute in terms of device is the kindle fire, but that brings with it all the issues of software / lack of power. Still a better substitute for most use cases than the plus sized phone though.

I tried an iPhone plus for several months and hated it. I can’t carry that thing around all the time.

It drives me nuts when people claim that iPhone _ Plus is almost as big as an iPad mini. The size difference is significant, and the use cases are much different. I will concede that there is probably no reason to own both a Plus model iPhone and a mini, but they are still very functionally different devices.

I had an iPad Mini when they first came out. Actually, I still have it in a drawer somewhere. At the time I loved the size. It was just what I wanted, something bigger than my phone but easy to handle!

When I got the iPhone 6 Plus, it almost completely negated the mini. Yes, they are different in size. Yes, the mini was still a different device and experience. But what I saw happen was I just stopped picking it up. Before if I wanted to watch a video, grab the iPad! Once I had the plus phone, might as well just use it... it's already on me!

I suspect this is what has weakened demand in the iPad mini. I do have an iPad Air 2, and I use it more than I was the mini there at the end. But the size difference helps justify picking it up more I guess. That being said, I would love for them to keep making all sizes of the iPad so there was choice for consumers.

I think the mini is dead, although I wouldn't mind seeing a new one come out.

Definitely want one too! Despite having an 8+, the mini is definitely still very useful because of its form factor. It fits well in a jacket pocket.

Never going to happen not when apple is bringing out a 6.5 inch iphone.

So true. This is also why the display of the iPhone 8 Plus and its predecessors is effectively larger than the X even though the former is measured smaller.

As someone who has owned a plus sized iPhone and iPad mini at the same time, I can say that there is a pronounced difference in functionality between a large phone and an iPad mini. That being said, I ended up replacing my Mini 4 with the 9.7” 6th Gen iPad. I suspect that all mini users will just have to bite the bullet and get used to a “full sized” iPad like did.
