i like this sooo much better than the whitebooks.. the magnets on those r so strong it takes like two hands to open for me.. these it takes 1 finger to pull it up =D

I started putting a microfiber cloth between the screen and base when I close it, right where it "latches", which makes it a lot easier to open. Hopefully it will help avoid the cracking I've been reading about.

What I don't understand about the cracking is, if it's a design flaw, why haven't they done anything to address it, since they're replacing the tops at no charge to the consumer? You'd think that they'd want to fix the problem once and for all instead of applying a band-aid.

I noticed today that my macbook display latch has somehow gotten weaker. I usually carry the laptop in a vertical position in my hand without a problem. when i did that today, the display popped out slightly.

I don't know whether this is a good thing or bad thing. It wasn't always like this. It was definitely more "normal" until a few hours ago.

I noticed today the same problem on my Alum Macbook that I purchased less then a year ago.

I reported my problem to two different reps at Apple; tech support is aware of this "lid opening when at 90 degrees" problem and have it documented in their problem-based directories. Currently however, it is not merited as a warranty approved fix. Supposedly its been an issue only for Aluminum Macbooks manufactured in 2008. Newer Alum Macbook Pros seem to not be affected.

I've had Apple put a note on my file outlining my situation; the rep told me that if/when Apple decides to fix these issues, clients whose 1 year warranties have expired should still be eligible to have their Macbooks fixed.
I suspect they won't do much until enough people start complaining about the problem. For me personally, the problem is not so much that the computer opens when on its side but that when the lid opens it will come out of sleep mode and drain the battery.

The quick fix for those carrying Alum Macbooks in carriers is to pack them with the opening at the bottom. That is; with the hinge facing down so that the Apple logo is upside down when at a 90 degree angle. At first I thought this was a no no but was assured by Apple that the computers are designed to be packed either way.

Hope this helps. If enough people call in to Apple tech support they might do something about it.

My Unibody MB has this sane hinge popping open problem....it started a while ago suddenly for no apparent reason.....i will take it in for repair when i have time.....i have a years of Applecare left...

But IMHO the hinge popping open when carried is NOT normal....it is a weakness in the hinge.......

to all those that thinks it nicer to have a weak magnet...your insane.

My unibody macbook was fine for 6 months than it decided to not stay closed when on it's side. I managed to get it fixed with alot of struggle (search for my thread on it if you wish).

If you ever at all pack your laptop around it's definitely not good to have it opening and closing in your bag. When it opens up, it creates a chance for some object to get between your keyboard and screen. if this ever happens, your screen will most likely crack. and whos fault will it be when you try to get it repaired at the apple store? the users...aka they wont make the repair. so, i think it's bs that they won't willingly do the repair to fix the weak magnets for you.

If anything my magnet is too strong. Gives a nice solid thwamp when closing.
