Sorry this is not app specific, but this is the most appropriate forum...i think!

I've just bought a domain which came with POP3 mail too, 'great' I thought, 'I can have my own personal e-mail address' but I've read on the help that I can use the e-mail service to send mail but not receive it, doesn't come with SMTP. That doesn't make sense!!!

So I can't tell me friends my new address as it can't received mail, but I can tell them they might received an e-mail from me at my new address?!?!

Am I missing something crucial here?

Cheers

I think that it would be the opposite. If it is a POP3 account, you can receive mail there but need to use a different SMTP server (your own ISP's, for example) to send.

What's the point of that?

The arrangement I described is fairly standard these days. No one wants to run an SMTP server any more, because it's a hassle if spammers find a way in.

I've sent mail okay but when I send to my new account it I get faiure message.

Just to be clear, how do you mean you've sent mail? Just the ordinary arrangement using your old SMTP server?

Do you get the failure message when sending mail to your new address when sending from your old/existing setup? What is the message?

Sorry if this seems overly basic, I just want to make sure I understand what is happening and what is going wrong.

I've sent mail from my new address using 123-reg site [where I bought the domain] to my gmail account with no problems, then when I click 'reply' I get a 'Delivery Status Notification' e-mail which states:

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently"

Cheers for your help.

Okay. In Gmail, when you do that reply, does the address in the To: field match what you expected to have for a new email address?

in the delivery status message, did it have anything more than "failed permanently"? It's so much more helpful when the server supplies a reason. Are there any status numbers (would look something like 5.0.0) in there?

When you are sending the mail over to Gmail, how is that happening? Are you using some kind of webmail thing at the hosting company, or using something like mail.app?

(Maybe you could PM me mail address you are having trouble with, so I might peek at the headers on the error I get back?)

[Edit to tie up loose ends: From the headers, it looks like the hosting company's mail server needs to be given permission to route the stuff.]
