I want to create a personal web site from my home. I am new to this, so am wondering if anyone can recommend a good host that offers support for the Mac and Dreamweaver. Also - one that is "user-friendly" to novices...i.e. offers good tutorials or online/chat support & FTP information.

Price is not as big an issue as is support. Under $8/mo. would be fine. Also --I noticed that sometimes hosts offer free domain names. That would be a plus, but not necessary.

Why not a .Mac account? Very user friendly for the novice.

You can buy a domain from places like GoDaddy or MyDomain and then use a DNS service such as MyDomain to forward that domain to your .Mac website.

Total cost
Domain name - $8-9/year
Hosting - $99/year
Forwarding - free

Plus you have other features of .Mac to use.

Someone around here is making a "DO NOT USE" list. I can't remember who though.

NDCTech.com is very inexpensive and feature-laden. I'd recommend them.

I use .Mac myself, so I recommend it just like kingjr3. It's extremely simple to use, plus you don't need FTP to edit your site - you can just open the Sites folder on your iDisk and put the HTML there. As for Dreamweaver support...don't worry about it. As far as I know, Dreamweaver outputs standard HTML, which ALL web hosts support.
 
Your ISP probably gives you space to host a personal Web site. Then you could forward a domain name, etc. to that space if you need. That's cheaper than .mac. For uploading files, just use Dreamweaver's FTP function. Your ISP tech support should be able to help out if you need it.

Yes - I do have a .mac account, but haven't experimented with the homepage feature much yet. Used to have a free Geocities page longago & faraway when I used FrontPage -- and that was pretty easy.

Hmmmm - didn't realize I could transfer a domain name to .mac.

Just wanted to get a general idea of what people "out there" were using.

I encourage everyone to check out this site by a fellow .Mac subscriber. Previously, the site could be accessed here, but the link seems to no longer work.

If you need it I have a dedicated webserver hosted in a San Antonio facility.

I can offer ya any type of package you need, and customize it to your needs. All sites have CPANEL control, so you can configure databases, information and anything really from Cpanel.

If ya need more info PM me.

I just changed the server over to a faster box (its dedicated for webhosting, and the center has an OC12 connection) so I'm rebuilding the site so its just a generic page now.

I have 2 terabytes of bandwidth per month on this box so we can easily get thigns going for just about any setup. Oh yeah... its a Linux server too.
