so im going to college in a few weeks and i wanted to buy my girlfriend a webcam so that we could video chat while i'm away. however, im not quite certain as to what i should buy. she has both a mac and pc and so i was wondering what sort of webcam would work best so that she could have the option of running it on both?

The X-Box Live Cam works very well in both Tiger and Leopard.
You'll also find the QuickCam® Vision Pro by Logitech works quite well and is apparently quite nice. The price difference between the two is $100 though. I've chatted using the x-box camera and seems no one complains...well I've only spoken to one person over it so take that fwiw.
There are also many more cameras but those two options are best case (price) worst case depending upon your budget.
