Also the Fantastical 2 calendar seems no different then iCal that I use. I still get exchange request for iCal and it seems to do nothing extra. Plus my eco system, iPad MBP iPhone Mini is all iCal.

Trust me on this one. If you can't see why you'd care about Fantastical, install it. It's not so much that it's a better calendar than iCal. It just makes iCal more convenient. In a nutshell, it widgetizes iCal as a menu icon app so it's always in front of you, yet out of the way.

Already have istat and fantastical - but PDF Expert is mighty tempting as Acrobat Pro is the one last thing I need to ditch so I no longer rely on Adobes subscription based services (thanks to Affinity Photo & Designer)

And integrates Reminders. I can't live without Fantastical!!

Your right, it is a friendly informative calendar app vs iCal. Glad you talked me into trying it.

Thank you smirking.

Thank you smirking.

You're welcome! When I first installed it, it seemed like much ado about nothing. It was in my menubar, but I never even accessed it because I was so used to launching iCal to get my calendar. It took a while for me to realize why such a deceptively simple app had so many fans.

When Fantastical 1 intially launched, it was the only way to use natural language event entry to get events into iCal. You couldn't yet type in "Pick up groceries at 4pm today" into iCal and get an event or reminder. You needed Fantastical to do that.

While you can do that in iCal now, Fantastical lets you do that from the menubar so you don't get distracted by your calendar. It's great when you're in the middle of something and you want to record something as quickly as possible and get back to work.

InDesign is the last thing keeping me tethered to Adobe.

Hey, be wary of iStat Menus! I think it just corrupted my MBP. I’m not entirely sure it was the culprit, but I started getting strange errors in High Sierra after I installed it. When I couldn’t turn on Bluetooth, I decided to run the iStat Menus uninstaller. It did more than just uninstall iStat Menu unfortunately. It wiped out all of my file mappings to applications so that nothing would open.

It’s still too early for me to tell if iStat Menus was the true culprit, but beware just in case. If your system starts acting funny afterwards, do not run the uninstaller.

I’m in recovery mode running Disk Utility right now in hopes that’s all it’ll take to fix the issue.

Does anyone know if any of the other password managers are worth it on stack social. I used 1Password right now but it’s the old model and it’s hard for me to justify the subscription price. Stacksocial has sticky password and password boss for a good deal. Has anyone used either?

This week, StackSocial is highlighting a notable new bundle of mac apps called the Epic Mac Bundle, including Fantastical 2, Flux 7, iStat Menu, PDF Expert, and more. Valued at $478.71, the bundle has been discounted to $29.99 for a limited time, but an additional promo code is knocking the price down to just $22.50 for the next two days.

Affinity Publisher is in beta, but soon enough.......

I know. I got the very first beta of it and didn't get very far. I forgot about it and just downloaded latest beta after posting my message. It's looking better. Too bad it can't read *.indd format, but being able to edit the PDFs produced by InDesign is not a bad alternative.

Would you mind explaining why Fantastical is worth anything when iCal is free? iCal syncs with the iPhone iPad calendar as well. Can you set Fantastical as the default iOS calendar? What could a third party calendar possibly due that would make it worth paying for?

The copy says it does these things, but they all describe iCal as well:

  • Use natural language to quickly create events & reminders and coordinate seamlessly w/ coworkers
  • Set time & geofence alerts for your reminders
  • Combine duplicate events across multiple calendars
  • View maps of the locations where your events occur & get travel time and time to leave notifications
  • Receive instant updates & manage attachments on Exchange, Office 365, & more
  • View your life in day, week, month, & year views
Sure: it is nice to have it right there in the Menu Bar beside the clock with the date in the icon; one click and a simple calendar drops down with upcoming events. The UI is very pleasant to look at. Another click and it opens up like iCal on the desktop for overview and easy event creation. and it also looks great on iPad. There's a reason they were asking $50- for the Mac version-2 - but $25- was as high as I would go and versoin-1 is(was) OK. iCal is fine too.

And you can set it to be the default calendar app so other apps know to use Fantastical instead of iCal? It already drives me crazy that links in my iPhone mail app open in Safari instead of chrome, I don't think I could handle it doing that with events.

Inflating the value makes the final savings look good.
Actually I find the bundle a steal. I bought it and I’m very happy with it :). Will I use all apps included in the bundle? I doubt it, but some for sure and it’s a very good deal.

FYI, you don’t have to subscribe. They just make it a little difficult to discover that. I’ve been using 1P for years, syncing happily via iCloud.

Wait.... it can't read InDesign files? Blast... I didn't even read it fully then, I was just waiting until the official release. I totally assumed it could!

Well, at least it doesn't appear like it can read *.indd files. I downloaded the new beta yesterday and wasn't able to open anyting that was an *.indd extension, but I was able to export those designs to PDF format and then open them in Affinity Publisher for editing.

Yep, the first Preference in iCal Preferences is the option to select Default Calendar.

As for setting Chrome as the default browser in iOS the $1.99 "Uptime - Web Browser" app may be able to help you with that.
For this you may also need to (not sure) disable Safari in iOS:
1 Launch Settings from your Home screen.
2 Tap Screen Time.
3 Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
4 Enter a four-digit passcode and then confirm it.
5 Tap the switch next to Content & Privacy.
6 Tap Allowed apps.
7 Tap the switch next to the Safari to disable.

I have not verified this iOS trick for myself.

Interestingly enough UltData-Mac Data Recovery is detected as PUP (potentially unwanted program) by Malwarebytes. I contacted Malwarebytes about the detection, and they informed me that while the program in and of itself is not malicious, they have noticed some shady behavior on behalf of Tenorshare (the company that makes UltData), and as such have it registered as PUP. Debating if I want to keep it installed or not - haven't noticed any issues, but I'm wondering if it tries to phone home. Little Snitch picked up a few requests from UltData, but I figured it was for standard stuff like checking for updates and activating my registration...

Thanks - that good to know.

I did buy and try a few of the well reviewed apps. So far, happy with istat, fantastical, and pdf expert. Not bad for $20ish

is that true? i tried to find the way to upgrade without subscribing and could no longer find it. Would you be able to point me in the right direction?

i currently use 1PW between my mac, iphone, and windows computer at work. It looks like Chrome in windows no longer supports the older 1PW so i thought my only option was to 1.) use firefox on my windows, 2.) subscribe to 1PW, or 3.) try a different pw manager.
