    Weekly Photo Contest - 10th-17th July, 2015

Welcome to this weeks photo contest thread!

The theme this week is: "Stories..." as in... "The stories it/they could tell..."

The subject (person, place, or thing) must invoke the feeling that if asked, or if it could speak, it must have some interesting stories to tell. In other words, the subject might appear to offer a sense of hardship, history, or unique opportunity.

    Rules:

    Be creative and have fun.

You may only submit one photo per contest.

Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)

At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision.)

The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

I submitted this about 5 weeks ago for another theme, but it fits here and I do not have time this week to go out and shoot anything.

Pretty sure I have shared this one before, but it fits the theme so well...

When I started this theme, I expected to get lots of pictures of old people, places and things, and it turned out to be a very challenging subject for me to judge in the end. There's no doubt that many of the subjects presented in any of these photos could have stories to tell. However, I'm a bit surprised by some submissions that I don't think fit this theme at all. I'd welcome a discussion on what people felt this theme was vs. what it wasn't. A photo of an old person, a rusted old car, a broken weapon, a run-down building, or even a cobble-stone street would be ideal subjects in my mind. Kids and staged settings just don't seem to fit the theme, yet some of you submitted such photos. I'm really interested to hear from some of you.

I hate judging, or rather I find it very difficult to provide constructive feedback in a tactful manner, but here it goes...

    - MacRy: a heart touching photo that aligns with the theme and is a nice photo. Well done, you win!
    - tomnavratil: a very interesting photo that draws you in and leaves you wondering what went on here... My 2nd choice.
    - AlexH... while a beautiful scene that could win many other contests, the subjects having their backs to the camera doesn't really make them good subject for this theme
    - deep diver: A perfect subject for this theme, but the sepia and vignette treatment is a bit overdone for my taste. Good submission.
    - Miltz: great shot of a clearly interesting couple, however, I question if they are old and experienced enough to have the stories required to win this contest.
    - Apple fanboy: Interesting setting but cluttered (what's the subject?) and the lighting isn't very interesting
    - someoldguy: Great subject for this theme... no doubt some great stories this thing could tell... You win 3rd place.
    - Larid Knox: Nice lighting and an interesting setting (or set? - it looks staged). Hard to tell how old this is though. Age is not apparent.
    - Melizard: Great photo just doesn't seem to be what I was looking for with this theme.
    - NeGrit0: Another good photo but I'm curious why you think this is a good fit for this theme? I disagree.
    - gaswerks: Great photo but as cute as it is, their age makes it hard for them to compete with other subjects presented here... I'm curious why you felt this fit the theme?
    - kenoh: Interesting choice of subject, I like it. Nice photo technically. Worthy contender. Not much more to say.
    - rx7dude: A fabulous old building that meets the theme perfectly, unfortunately the lighting is unflattering. Black and white might have helped this.

The winner this week is MacRy with a touching, well composed photo of a subject that clearly has a lot of stories to tell.

Great theme, and you did a great job judging it. I appreciate this kind of critique. The treatment of this photo was intentional. I was going for something very old, and this felt like an image that might have come out of the Civil
    War.

I appreciate your thoughts very much!!! I apologize to you (and perhaps a few others) for not being able to appreciate the photo sufficiently to give it the credit it was due. :( I do think your photo was perfectly aligned with the theme... well done.

Well done MacRy! Thanks for a good contest everyone.

It looks to me as though the subjects of NeGRit0 and gasworks' photos are actually telling stories. :)

    Well done MacRy, well deserved.

I was struggling this week to balance work and my photos hence the holiday shot. Being a contender is all I want, I think there were some very very good entries this week. Well done everyone.

I have found this week's contest tricky myself and thought what would come up. I have, however, interpreted the theme the same way you wanted and thus my picture from an old Cambodian prison, turned into a museum.

This week's judging has been quite difficult and challenging but I think you've done a great job! Congrats to MacRy for his touching picture and winning this week and well done to all the entries.

Thank you for the second place!
