Ok on to the winners.

3rd Place - Third place was really hard for me to decide on as I had three contenders for it. In the end I went with kenoh which might mean that i'm biased because of my horological fixation (worth bearing in mind if I ever judge again) but it is technically a really good photo too. Props to themumu and Ardmanz though as they were the ones that gave me trouble in this placing.
2nd Place - DirtySocks85's snake is a lesson in shallow DOF and a really nice photo.
1st Place - JDDavis with that gorgeous shot of the ball. Wonderful colours, perfect composition, great use of DOF. What a shot! Tell us about it please.

So there you go folks. I hope that my critique didn't offend anyone and that you take it in the spirit in which it was intended. Thanks for all of your entries this week. Looking forward to the next one already.

Thanks for the 2nd place nod, and congrats to JDDavis for the win (excellent photo, very deserving of the title this round), and to kenoh on 3rd place. Really a fun set of diverse entires this week, and I don't envy MacRy for having to judge this round.

A bit on the image I submitted (because I like reading what I type): I cranked my 50mm 1.8 wide open for this one, and as much as I do like it, I actually think stopping it down to about 2.2 would have been a good call here. I did this one during a senior portrait session this past weekend, and I know that many models would balk at being blurry and the "background" of the image, Bailey got super excited when I showed her the preview.

Great job everybody. Thanks for the feedback MacRy. Yes it was quite harsh lighting and windy too. Trying to capture a bee on a flower on a windy day is tricky for me (and like a spanner I'd left the tripod in the car).

To Dirtysocks, that's a great capture. Great job.

Looking forward to the next.

Btw my wife's birthday is the 5th. You nearly gave me a heart attack!

Glad you like it. The whole shoot was a lot of fun, and the idea to do a very shallow DOF on the snake's head was a very spontaneous idea. Then again, you're clearly an animal lover, because you comment on my stuff all the time. :)

If I were photographing a snake, I would be doing it with a Super Telephoto from the other side of the room and a remote trigger! sod that for a game of soldiers! 50mm at a snake... no way!

Elbert C - I couldn't wait for this competition to be over so I could ask you what the hell that is that the fly is sitting on! It looks like some kind of weird inflatable but I can't figure it out. I really like the shallow DOF in this, it's razor thin and you did well to get the fly in focus. I'd be interested to hear what you shot it with and at.

I don't know what it's called but, it's midway on the side of an 18 foot Lund aluminum skiff. This photo was taken with my 300mm f4 lens on my Pentax K5.

Great job on the judging and congrats to the winners.

Yep, still no wiser :)

My lawyer will be calling your lawyer...Mr. MacRy.

And btw, what exactly are "tough titties" anyway?

"Tough Titties" as a rough translation would be a hybrid sentiment equivalent of the combination of classic use of "bite me" and "get over it"...

You guys in the US may be running the latest version of English but we own the source code... :)

The UK and US. Two nations, separated by a common language. :D

Where I'm at, you can sometimes hear "tough sh_t" being used, I thought it was just a more polite version, with the titties instead. ;)

Nah, Cleo the ball python is one of my best friends. I handle her on a regular basis. For me the toughest part was sitting back and snapping photos of Bailey handling her instead of holding Cleo myself.

Man that gives me the heebie jeebies.... (defn: makes my skin crawl)...

kingalexthe1st (all hail our new leader) - Film photography is welcome here. We're all friends. It's a good shot and well done for nailing the focus on the bee with a MF lens. I'm a big fan of them myself (albeit on digital) and I know how tricky that can be. I look forward to hearing what equipment you shot that with.

Sorry for my late reply! Well done to the winners, well deserved. For what it's worth, I shot that on a Pentax KX with a Pentax 50mm f/1.7 lens at f/2, on Velvia 50 film.
