Weekly Photo Contest - 2nd July - 9th July, 2015

Welcome to this weeks photo contest thread!

The theme this week is: the Opposite of Tranquility. Some antonyms to the word ‘tranquility’ are:

"chaos, disturbance, loudness, noise, excited, turbulence, violence, wildness"

Feel free to interpret as you see it. Be creative !

Rules:

Be creative and have fun.

You may only submit one photo per contest.

Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)

At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision.)

The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Taken at Hollowell Steam Rally this weekend just gone. It would be better for this theme if I could have incorporated a sound track!

A scan from a early 1990s photo - there's an Avon 5 metre inflatable boat with a large engine in there somewhere - my colleague came off the top of a wave at full bore and plunged straight into the next.
These boats were the greatest fun I ever had in my job :)

Cheers :)

Just a few more hours before I shut this weeks contest down. I should have some time later this evening to critique and choose a winner :)

This week's contest will close at 6pm EST in the US or 11pm in the UK. I don't see anyone posted from anywhere further east, so that should cover it.

Critiques and Choices

@MacRy - Your image evokes a bit of panic in me. I recall being on the Tube a few times years ago in London and feeling very confined. That is certainly not tranquil !
Well done !

@NeGRit0 - Exciting view of fireworks and a lightning strike. It seems a little dark, but still, a great shot ! I won’t suggest any enhancements to your work other than making the lights and fireworks a bit brighter. Nicely done.

@tomnavratil - I have seen other photos of crazy wiring from around Asia. I’ve been curious to know if all that mess causes lots of power outages. Your photo evokes some sense of chaos yet still orderly. Nicely done.

@Ish - You mentioned incorporating a soundtrack to your photo. “Locomotive Breath” comes to mind.
I did get a sense of motion and tremendous power with your photo. Nicely done.

@rx7dude - Your photo on Flickr seems small in it’s file size. I could not see much other than it’s a race. I do love a good motorcycle race. A sense of speed and motion is certainly plain to see. Nicely done.

@VirtualRain - Well, Vegas appears to be completely devoid of calm, tranquil or quiet. I’ve not been there, but have heard plenty from those who have. It’s crazy, wild and everything that is the opposite of tranquil. You have certainly nailed it with this one ! Well done !

@Hughmac - If you hadn’t offered an explanation of what was going on in this photo, I would have just thought of a powerful splash of a wave. Powerful, relentless, the roar of the sea. Nicely done.

@someoldguy - Your photo is impressive in it’s representation of the vast power of water flowing. Strangely enough, I would find something ‘tranquil’ in watching that even with it being very intense. Nicely done.

@filmbufs - Your bright and energetic photo evokes a sense of fun times for me. The carnival atmosphere is always loud and bright. I like how you got some sense of motion with the wheel lights. Well done !

@Apple fanboy - Meow. No, I would not feel at all tranquil on the other side of that fence. Likely not even on this side of it. Well done.

@Laird Knox - Boom ! That’s a terrific capture of fireworks. Definitely get excited seeing and hearing them go off. Very nice indeed !

Brilliant submissions everyone. It’s difficult to choose, as it always seems to be. So, here are my selections for this week.

3rd Place - goes to Laird Knox. Exciting, bright, loud, and the smell of cordite. Not tranquil.

2nd Place - goes to MacRy. Certainly, the claustrophobic feeling your image evokes are not tranquil.

1st Place - goes to VirtualRain. Your photo comprises all the things that are the opposite of tranquil.

Well done stillcrazyman and thanks for the critiques. Well done VR, that's a very aptly-named picture! Most of our cities have become darker in the evening as lights are changed or turned off as part of our commitment to reducing CO2 output, but even before I've never seen anything like that. Must be a nightmare if you want to sleep!

And well done to everyone else too :)

Great submissions everyone, well done. I was trying to put a bit of a different perspective with my wiring picture as I was expecting a lot of lights, waterfalls etc.! And yes, it does cause a lot of power outages, you kind of get used to it though. :)

Congrats to the winners, well deserved with @MacRy's pic being my favourite this week.
