I was staring out of a train window last weekend and thinking about things. This lead to some thoughts about how to capture motion and I realised I keep seeing photos that describe motion using motion blur. There are other ways. Get your fast shutters ready...

So this week's theme is "motion in stillness". As abstract as you want to go.

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
Contest closes April 17th at 1pm Pacific time (8pm local BST - reminder to self)

Thanks all for submission. Competition is now closed.

Results as soon as possible. Likely tomorrow morning UK time as I’m without data in about 10 minutes for a few hours!

Without further ado, here we are. I've left everyone a brief comment as there weren't too many submissions.

@mollyc - Like the abstract nature of this and the use of lighting. Makes you look at it and the more you look the more you see. Carefully avoided motion blur but used depth of field to bring the moving subject out. Very nice.

@Snowlover - Top action shot. Love the enthusiasm there from the subject who appears to be rather liking that snow!

@C0ncreteBl0nde - This one reminds me of me in the 80s, minus the broken limbs. Definitely a feel of motion here. Satisfying subject isolation with lots of context around it too.

@CK Williams - One very wet dog. Perfect fast shutter capture that. Particulate water everywhere! Can feel the motion there.

@goldmac2006 - Timing on this one is immaculate. Direction of travel requires some thinking which is good. Makes you look further at it. Nice framing and context.

@oblomow - Like the framing on this one. And the clear anticipation and concentration of the pilot. And the perception of movement of the grass in the background.

@kendallm - An excellent picture on it's own. Really shows life on the subway nicely. Perfectly captured passengers as well. But less movement visible than others.

@Strider64 - Excellent shot "on the wing". Elegantly gliding through the air without any effort. Nice use of light and negative space.

@_timo_redux_ - Love the use of negative space and the increasing speed of the geese. Also the colours. The distorted reflections through the water show movement in an interesting way. Amazing.

@iPhone-Guy - Amazing contrast, great action shot. Actually my favourite birds as well. But alas I have to rate on the brief :)

@arkitekt - Nice shot of the Pantheon through the fountain opposite. Water captured perfectly. Excellent contrast and the subject just hits you in the face properly. Really like this one a lot.

------

There are some very very close ones here so this was quite hard to pick the winners, resorting to having to fire up Numbers and make a little spreadsheet for scoring and that was still tight. Well done all - they were all excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed all your work. On the podium we have ...

1st place: @_timo_redux_

2nd place: @arkitekt

3rd place: @mollyc

@cjsuk Thank you very much the 2nd place. Glad you liked it… I was split between two choices for my submission. In the end opted for the non human / animal motion. 🙂

Congrats to @mollyc and @_timo_redux_ for the winning spot.
As always I am sure you'll come up with a thoughtful and interesting subject.

PS. @cjsuk You tagged the wrong arkitect. 🙂 I never realised there is someone else here with a very similar forum name.

It was a good one that. I spent a good hour ambling around there trying to find a good shot to take in the middle of December last year. Got nowhere and went and got gelato in the end and crawled back to my AirBnB disappointed 🤣

Whoops! Last time I trust autocomplete. Will use my eyes next time instead :)

Thanks for the great judging; intrigued by a spreadsheet approach to picking your list. And thanks for pointing out something I missed in my own photo ... when you make something you like, it can keep showing itself to you in new ways.

New contest up.

I love this photo! If I may suggest, if you cropped off the heads at the bottom it would be one for the wall! Off with their heads!!😁 The ducks are well placed with a little extra room on the left to move into, the shoreline colours are lovely and the horizontal out of focus layers have an abstract feel. The picture moves from the realistic to abstract as you look higher. Brilliant, well done!

Terrific topic for the weekly contest, some excellent entries, and excellent judging, @cjsuk.

Personally, I loved @kendallm's wonderfully atmospheric urban shot, - I love that sort of subject in such a setting - and was also very taken by the images posted by @arkitect (wonderful composition, setting and lighting), and @mollyc.

And what a superb shot by @_timo_redux_, lovely composition, subject, lighting.
