@kendallm :I feel that I've sat in that very spot in Seattle; drinking coffee and watching the people go by. Although it was a tough time (I was being tested at Virginia Mason hospital), it brings back fond memories.

@mollyc : VERY much taken with your choice for this contest...I felt like the vertical posts brought out the wide angle two-fold and it's an all-around lovely capture.

Some really beautiful work, everyone.

Glad I didn't have to judge this one ! Congrats to those who placed , and especially to @arkitect . You just nailed both the lighting and composition in your entry .
I guess I should have cloned out the rocks in my entry , but they were the reason for my visiting the Racetrack , so decided to leave them in ... https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/the-racetrack.htm

I haven't visited the Racetrack yet, but it's on my bucket list. Did you get closer to any of the moving rocks? And how difficult is the road there now? I've heard different things since some of the flooding in Death Valley in recent years. Nice work!

Nicely judged contest with constructive feedback to all.

The red light was purposefully done with a night photography light, viewed full size has different impact than small screen. Possibly I could have lightened it some, the intent is having the viewers eye move foreground to background. I’ll try that as revision.

I’ve submitted other star trails in different contests here over the years , so went with the one I did last year to not double dip.

We don’t apply chemicals to our lawn, grow wildflowers, hence lots of fireflies in the summer.

Got close enough to touch them .

You have to go to the second parking area and then walk across the playa toward the mountains on the far side . It's a bit of a walk , so sun block/hat/water are called for . You can see the rocks from the parking area with a decent set of binoculars .
I was there in early May of 2019 so can't answer for road conditions today . When I was there , the first few miles from Ubehebe Crater were wide and washboarded pretty well . Further in the road narrowed down so for 2 cars to pass both had to go up onto the stones on the sides of the road . 4WD and ground clearance came in handy on the one or 2 times I encountered oncoming traffic . Plus there were well rutted spots in a few places .

Very nice star trail shots. I like the ones with the fireflies. We don’t get them here. I need to get out and do some star trails myself. Haven’t done one of those since back in the film days…

Tripod, 15 second exposure each, 100’s images - most modern digital SLR have built in ability for multiple exposures , if satellites / planes are in them PP them out if you want just star arcs, stack them.

Much easier than when I first did them in 2009, using a intraleavometer (sp), kit lens, DSLR camera had high noise above ISO 1600, focusing was a challenge, etc.

Terrific topic, @_timo_redux_ , and excellent, thoughtful, and well observed, yet positive, judging.

Some wonderful entries, which I greatly enjoyed.

However, I was particularly taken by the terrific landscape shots submitted by @arkitect and @oblomow: I know from personal experience that landscape shots rarely come out in a photograph as the naked eye sees them, not least with the muted colour palette of our eyes and lives, as experienced in the temperate lands of north west Europe; the tropics are a lot more colourful.

Thus, - and this is especially for @arkitect - to capture that elusive quality of light, - successfully - in an exceedingly well composed - and atmospheric - landscape shot is very impressive (and very difficult). Actually, @arkitect's image struck me as almost being the sort of outdoor equivalent of an indoor Dutch/Flemish painting (one of my favourite styles of art, along with Impressionism, and both to do with capturing - and using - and painting with, light).

Was also partial to the extraordinary nocturnal shot submitted by @richardallan - amazing.

Loved @mollyc's shot - terrific lines, lighting, composition, subject matter; lovely.

Personally, I love classical music, and attending classical concerts; an opera house shot will always meet with my delighted approval, thank you, @piatigorsky.

And, lastly, I really loved the café shot submitted by @kendallm; wonderfully atmospheric, and the exact type of urban setting that I just love; love, too, seeing a woman photographed, and portrayed, just having a coffee, and enjoying what my late mother - who greatly enjoyed these small pleasures of life - used to describe as "watching the passing parade".
