The subject for this week is one of the most discussed in recent history - the moon. We've seen a lot of images taken from space. Let's have a look if a good image can be taken from the earth 😉

As always, the standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work. No AI generated images.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end 21 April, 23:59 CET

Thank you all for your images, they are all great and as always, they didn't make the job of judge easy.

@ToddH - that is the moon in its full glory, I like all craters and different landmarks visible on the photo

@goldmac2006 - the best camera is one you've got with you 😉 like it, the image has a certain feeling of dark night and something spooky lurking around, the inner circle ruins it a bit for me

@Snowlover - great capture, the moon is nicely framed by dark leaves and the sky colours are nicely complementing yellow-ish colour of the moon

@piatigorsky - well documented encounter of multiple species, probably on the dark side of the moon, love it 😉

@C0ncreteBl0nde - another creative approach, I like contrasty colours, not sure about the orange "flame" though

@oblomow - I suspect that your real name is Gru 😉 it looks like a science museum, there are people around for scale, it's huge, must be great experience to see it

@mtbdudex - a timelapse of the red moon, love the orange-red colour of the moon, great image. I would be tempted to clone out the stars; they are a bit distracting.

@arkitect - very nice landscape shot showing the scale against the dark country, simple, but effective, like it

@_timo_redux_ - at glance it looks like real moon 😉 I like the black and orange contrast, very nice photo

Thanks again for all your submissions and here is the podium:

3rd: @mtbdudex
2nd: @ToddH
1st: @Snowlover

Unfortunately I only have photo evidence of the first moon landing.

What Lego nasa set is that? My younger brother has the Artemis rocket set from the technic series.

Ngl I did this from the backyard with my iPhone, the farthest I can zoom into it.

I did see moons and planets on a telescope 🔭 before in my nasa internship back in the day. But it was hard for me to put my iPhone on the eyepiece because of the macro switching and needing to adjust it

Thanks for the win, wasn't expecting it.
Congrats to @ToddH and @mtbdudex, great job everyone.
I will see what I come up with for the next contest. May need to ask for assistance on the technical side, haven't done this in a while.

New contest is up.
Can someone update the master list for me? I can never seem to get it to work right.
Thanks
Never mind, I finally figured it out.

As always, some great photography. I had Snowlover chosen as my winner, too.

The orange frame is how it came out of the camera; no editing done except for a little saturation. I'm not really sure what caused that effect.

Great idea for a photo, have to think about something similar. I've got the Mars rover, so need to wait for Mars themed competition 😉
Actually this one was taken several years ago, when I was still experimenting with pushing black-and-white film to ridiculous limits. This one was Ilford HP5 (nominally ISO 400 film) pushed to ISO 6400, which was totally unnecessary since I was shooting at home with my camera on a tripod. For this contest I went through all the moon photos I took during Mid-Autumn Festival here (when we gaze at the full moon and eat moon cakes), but they all looked so "normal", so I went with a joke instead.

Btw, I made this thread that has lots of moon photos I and others have taken, over 250 posts

Full moon fever!!/Lunar "X"/General moon shots

Bottom line:
What I’ve learned, since 2009 & taking 100’s of moon images, is there’s always a better detailed moon shot, someone had bigger Optical lens, did 1000’s of stacked images, etc.

Hence combining a moon shot with foreground gives uniqueness to them.

Thanks for the link..

I've been shooting images of the moon lately, mainly with my Samsung S26 ultra. I've tried with my 17 pro max, but there is way less control over the camera as with the expert raw app on The Samsung s26 ultra. I probably should have used this one for the contest: Earthshine
Samsung S26 ultra, expert Raw, 5x camera 4" exposure, ISO 50. Lightroom mobile
