This week's theme is TRAVEL. I'm a fan of wide, well-composed shots of travel-related destinations. If you have been on vacation recently and you feel that you've captured something impressive, submit it here! But don't feel neglected if you haven't traveled the globe. Go scout your own area and capture something interesting about your city and find that 'perfect angle.'

To score bonus points, be mindful of long shots and composition. Extra bonus points if you take me to Paris for a week.

    Rules:

    Be creative and have fun.

Do some kind of random act of kindness (okay, I just threw that one in there.)

You may only submit one photo per contest.

Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)

At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision.)

The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

    Good luck!

Selfie during a recent Perseid meteor shower. It took a while to find a good, rural spot but it was totally worth it in the end!

Hi filmbufs, can you elaborate please? You say you like "wide, well-composed shots" but also say "be mindful of long shots". Just checking! :) Thanks!

Thanks for the question, @Ish. I think I'm trying to cover different terms that might be used. I come from a movie background so I'll use terms like long shot often. I was hoping wide (as in wide-angle) might also help convey that idea too. If it helps, think: wide angle without going into the fisheye distortion realm. :)

Here are two examples of Paris, illustrating how it doesn't have to be a landmark to give you a sense of place and they also reflect the long shot aspect.

I haven't travelled widely for ages, so here's the entrance to Upnor Castle, an Elizabethan fort on the River Medway in Kent; scene of a disastrous raid by the Dutch fleet in 1667 (disastrous to the English fleet, that is).
One of my favourite local places to visit. Perhaps mainly because of the pub at the top of the road which serves great food :)
Plus, it's not that far from Paris ...

    The Long Journey Home*

Found this discarded suitcase not too far from home and thought it needed to be dusted off, righted and posed looking like it was about to go off on one final journey.

I'm sure I have an absolutely stellar shot somewhere... but at the moment I have no time to look :(

It was a windy summer night...

Mark Twain said the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

    Guardsman'sPass resize cloned out artifacts.jpg

(Needs to be viewed full size.)

Twilight at Guardsman Pass in the Wasatch Range near Park City, UT. Shot at 10,000 ft elevation. Guardsman Pass is considered to be the most difficult bicycle climb in Utah. (I happily left my bike in Cleveland.)

@uvafan1 If you go to flickr, find your image, click on the arrow that's down on the bottom right of screen, it will bring up a selection box. Go to BB Code, cut and paste it in the editing field here. Your image will appear! I had to learn it a couple of weeks ago too. ;)

I've been lurking in the forums and stumbled in here just tonight, finding this thread. So here's my entry.
This is the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand from my honeymoon last December.
