I should be honest - the death of someone from my past is what really inspired me for the next contest. Here's the story behind what sparked this idea:

It's fascinating how certain memories persist throughout our lives, and how people we barely knew can leave lasting impressions. I have a vivid recollection of Linda, most likely her younger sister DonnaJean, and possibly her brother Richard from when I was about 7 years old. We were at the beach after a rainstorm, and I was there with my sister. I believe Linda asked me to sit in the sand, then they began crafting an airplane from the wet sand. The sculpture resembled a small fighter plane and was remarkably detailed and artistic. This memory still comes back to me, especially during summer rainstorms. Despite what anyone might say, we all impact others throughout our lives. Linda's obituary tells me she lived a fulfilling life and touched many people over the years.

A better description of the contest:

Extraordinary in the Ordinary

Capture the magic of creativity and imagination in everyday settings. Photograph subjects interacting with handmade, artistic, or improvised creations that transform ordinary moments into something extraordinary. Whether it's a child piloting a sand airplane at the beach, someone reading in a fort made of books, or any scene where human creativity meets playful imagination - show us how art and ingenuity can turn the mundane into the magical. Focus on the interaction between people and their creative constructions, highlighting the wonder and joy found in simple, artistic moments. Use your imagination and you don't have to create the scene as we all know photographing something ordinary can turn out to be extraordinary.

Some examples that I dug up from old photos though they aren't the greatest, but this is what I mean:

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end August 16, 2025 at noon EST.

Bellagio Conservatory’s summer display in vegas has a variety of animals transformed into humans wearing fancy clothes. This particular composition features a pink bird wearing a 19th century dress and feather fedora.

@Strider64 : I don't know if it's just me or if the lack of entries is because others are having the same problem I am, but I've read your intro and your expectations for this theme over and over and I'm still not sure what exactly you are looking for. Since some contest runners give examples in their opening theme explanation, would it be out of line for me to ask if you have any image examples you could share? If not, that's fine but I thought I would ask because I am confused as to what kind of photos you are looking for.

Hallo @Strider64 I am going to echo @C0ncreteBl0nde and ask for a guide on what exactly we are looking at to do…

The first part of your original post tells a wonderful story… the second part, that was intended to clarify, has left me a bit flummoxed. I may be missing the obvious — this is not a rare thing 🤣 — but I have come back to your post every day and I just don't get it.

Thanks!

Sorry I haven't gotten back here are some AI generated images what I was thinking of and I will extend the contest a couple of day if that is OK? Since it's the week how about Monday Aug the 18?

Sorry for the confusion, but basically taking something ordinary and putting in a scene that isn't ordinary. Nature and even happenstance of objects can make an interesting picture.

Go for it. Also y’all more clues. Surrealism and unusually realistic things go here too.

Now it is surrealism and unusually realistic things?
Why was that not in the first post then?
Exactly that’s how not as many people knew about the initial explanation. Key words should have been implied in that context.

This is supposed to be a fun contest and if there are no more entries by tomorrow August 18 6 pm EST - I will just say the second place of last week's contest to start a new photo contest.

Just award the win, to the only photo that was submitted. It meets, in my view, the interpretation, and gives joy to the person who submitted it.

Good Idea - the it goes to goldmac2006 and I'm out of here. Photo of the Day is better anyways.
Hey everyone, thanks a bunch for crowning me the winner! I know it was a bit of a puzzle for all involved figuring out the theme at first, but making sure it’s crystal clear is super important so everyone can jump in and have a blast.

I’m planning to get the next contest up by tomorrow night PDT! It’ll be something that’s easy to understand, so I’ll see you there!

Perhaps it would be a good idea for someone to start a discussion in the general photography area regarding updating the rules for the photography competitions and have a poll included.....? I do agree that it is time that we collectively address the issue of AI with regard to its use in photography as well as also update the rules and guidelines for the photography competitions and if needed, also the POTD. That way we would have some concrete ideas and suggestions to offer to the admin/mods team prior to anything being changed or implemented in the rules.

Done.
