This week's theme is a revival: juxtaposition

We did have an old contest with this theme, but it's such a broad topic I think we can do it again, with

More intensity!
(2:20 mark, Lost in Translation)

Juxtaposition is the compare and contrast of photography. Two (or more) different things being yoked together within the frame; ideally a kind of reflection about the subjects emerges, or a theme, or a beauty in how difference can create contrast can create meaning.

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
Have fun with this!

I think I've posted this before on a Photo of the Day thread, so I hope it's ok to repost. Shot with a Hasselblad 503cw on Kentmere Pan 400, printed on Ilford Multigrade RC Glossy photo paper.

Thanks everyone for your entries!

@Snowlover A lovely picture with nice parallels: the two horses to each other, the two hills to each other, both bigger horse/hill on the right, smaller on the left. Pleasing colors too.

@mollyc White and black subjects, a strong contrast between the formal dress of the bride and the informal dress of the police officer. Are we in New Orleans? This is a pleasingly odd picture; if you know it, I would love to hear its backstory

@oblomow I see a monastery partially built on a hill and partially into a large cave … extraordinary. The juxtaposition is easy: two shelters, one natural, one built

@C0ncreteBl0nde Two lamp (shadows), too hanging pots, both with a feeling of overflowing. Strong complementary color contrast between the yellow and the blue wall. Wish the shot cropped the signage at the lower right

@kendallm Two more horses; a different kind of juxtaposition than @Snowlover ’s: the same kind of horse but quite different expressions. Repetition and difference! Nice framing with the fence elements too; a kind of dynamic tension

@piatigorsky Definitely to my mind OK to post repeats (within reason). Shadows and reflections can be great juxtaposition vehicles. I like the pairing of the two women enframed, and also the pairing of two women in the reflected foreground. An intriguing picture that engenders a lot of questions or musings

@Janichsan The easy contrast between inside and outside; but also the contrast between that odd bright light near the subject and the dark shadows under the room’s platform. But also still the contrast between the two uprights in the picture: our subject and the tree outside. Dynamic raking lines in the eave above, clearly linear, also contrast with the spray of branches and leaves outside

***

Not easy to judge this week; I genuinely like all of the efforts. Thank you all for the intensity! and happy holidays everyone

3rd @mollyc

2nd @oblomow

1st @piatigorsky

A final note about my selections: I gravitated towards pictures a little mysterious or sublime; subjects juxtaposed in that kind of atmosphere can be the recipe for a truly evocative picture

Thanks for the first place finish! I really like this photo too. It was taken during the rehearsal for a play I was in, I set up the Hasselblad on a tripod in front of the mirror intending to do a double exposure of some kind, and the result far exceeded my expectations—I remember going "wow" the moment I removed the film from the development tank.

Let me have a think about next week's contest, should be up by tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the mention, and congratulations to @oblomow and @piatigorsky!

I actually don't know the backstory to this. My daughter and I were in New Orleans for a college tour and had some spare time so we went downtown. We were in Jackson Square and noticed a lot of hullabaloo in front of a church (St Louis Cathedral) and could tell they were getting ready for a wedding as we saw guests and family being escorted in. We waited for probably half an hour and finally saw the bride. I was not paying attention and this was the last image on my roll of film so the only one I actually got of the bride. 🤦🏼‍♀️ We waited so long I could have taken a detail shot then reloaded but rookie mistake. I have no idea who the bride was, but clearly with police presence the family was somehow important.

Good work, everyone! I am especially fond of @kendallm photo this week; made me laugh.
I may have misunderstood what Juxtaposition means, although I went as far as looking it up.
I remember @piatigorsky photo from Tizeye's "Out of Context" themed contest. @mollyc : Loved the cop and the bride take.

Looking forward to the next contest! With @piatigorsky at the helm it could be anything! :D
