A recent obsession for me has been architecture and attempting to photograph it. Anything from very refined buildings from classical antiquity through to modern brutalist hellscapes. Looking for new perspectives, contrasts and anything which raises eyebrows. Show me your best :)

  • The photographs must be your own work. No AI generated images.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end December 13, 2025 at 20.00 GMT

Hi everyone. Great submissions. Contest is now closed. May be a few hours for results as stuck in the middle of nowhere with limited data until the morning 😩

Ok finally managed to get a few minutes to sit down and write this one up. Unfortunately delayed again by some terrible transport issues and now being thoroughly diseased. Urgh. Thanks all for submissions! Really enjoyed these. They all have merit so this is quite hard. Had to dig out Numbers for this if I'm honest!

@AlixSPQR - Love this old court house. Please let me know where it is.

@oblomow - Interesting building. I will have to look it up. I like the person with the umbrella framed in there.

@arkitect - I saw a last minute change there. You heavily won me over with that one. I've got (another!) trip to Rome coming up and I shall bail out at Magliana on the way back from Ostia and have a look at the Palace of Labor! Great composition and subject matter. Totally unique building.

@goldmac2006 - cool residential building. Do you life there or in the locality? Interested to know where this construction is used. Like the composition.

@C0ncreteBl0nde - really like this one. Nice architectural detail showing some decay. Makes it more "real" than the usual. Thank you

@thirsty_monk - Cool terrace. Could imagine sitting there with a coffee. Like the leading lines but alas they seem to lead to a blank wall. Still like the photo though.

@CooperBox - Love this. Quite a few different things going on there. All framed nicely with some context in the back.

@_timo_redux_ - what's not to like. Interested to know where this is. Looks islamic? I like the angle, contrast and composition though. Very cool.

@Janichsan - I just love this. Easy win. The composition, contrast and subject matter is spot on.

Thanks everyone!

1st place goes to: @Janichsan

2nd place goes to: @arkitect

(joint) 3rd place goes to @C0ncreteBl0nde, @CooperBox and @_timo_redux_

Thank you for the placing! I appreciate it… 😀

Congrats to @Janichsan That is a stunner of a photo.

God, the EUR is a strange place. I personally love the architecture and the atmosphere… it feels as if you have stepped into a De Chirico painting.
Eerie — especially with a winter light and shadow.
You almost expect to hear a steam train whistle far off and a little girl running with her hoop.
Highly recommended.

I love this though… where is this?

It's Schloss Hof in Austria, the building on the left is orangery/glasshouse:

Many thanks for the joint 3rd place and your comments!
My photo depicts a scene in Ordino, a small town in the Pyrenees mountain range close to the Principality of Andorra. We drove there this summer to visit a permanent exhibition of works by Ukrainian master Nikolai Syadristy, who is considered as the world genius of miniature. Some of the unique exhibits are in gold, platinum, and natural materials, each creation presenting a different technical problem perfectly solved by the artist. Not surprisingly many of the exhibits cannot be clearly seen with the naked eye and can only be fully appreciated under a microscope. To say the works are mindblowing is in no way an exaggeration.
Over the next few days in the 'Photo of the Day' thread, I will post a few of these extraordinary exhibits that I photographed under a microscope. One example being a human hair 3mm long with the word 'PEACE' engraved in five different languages and decorated with a laurel wreath in gold.
