I love seeing pictures that evoke my other senses so lets explore one of them! Lets see your best "audible" pictures, things you can hear through the image. I love images that make me feel like I was there but I also find it hard for me to compose images that trigger the other senses. It may be a barking dog, a crying baby, moving water, or glass actively shattering.

Lets see how you interpret something being audible in an image.

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
Contest closes March 7th at 12:00 PM ET

sdge helicopter overhead x.jpg

@Snowlover : This is an awesome shot. I imagine the helicopter was far away from you and getting an in focus shot of a moving object with a long focal length can be challenging. I also like that you can still see that the blades are in motion by being subtly out of focus in comparison to the body. That movement helps portray the very distinct sound of a helicopter.

@goldmac2006 : This is a dope composition. It very much reminds me of a commercial product shot. I'm not sure how staged this was, but it looks like a lot of effort went into the lighting to control the shadows in the photo. A fun take on the theme as a sound come through headphones these days.

@Strider64 : I like this composition a lot! I love how the tones in the background accent the bold read on the woodpecker's head. I also that there are some foreground and background elements, but the bokeh on them really make the subject stand out. It can hear the knocking in my head.

@C0ncreteBl0nde : I love this scene! Anybody thats been to a game can likely hear the sighs and groans of a bad call in this photo! I wish more of the picture was in focus, but it definitely feels like a "loud" picture!

@_timo_redux_ : At the risk of doxing myself, this photo is just playing in my head. I actually went to this school and played bass drum in this band. Aside from the very personal emotions from this, its a very well composed picture. I love that you can see reflections of the crowd in the tuba of the main subject. Mardi Gras just passed and even though I wasn't there, this picture does a great job at capturing what I think is the parts of a parade, the bands.

@coolguy4747 : This is a great scene! The first thing I feel when looking at it is how loud it must have been. The crashing of the waves, the crashing of the humpbacks in the water, the whales vocalizing, and the birds screeching all make this a beautifully chaotic picture.

@piatigorsky : Awesome creative take on the theme! It reminds me of a photo-booth picture from a bar. I'm also very partial to film photography and i think this is a very playful exploration of the theme.

@arkitect : These look like they would have a nice crunch! Dope still life photo of an everyday item that I'm sure most people can place a distinct sound to.

@StrollerEd : This looks like it was a good time! One thing I really like about this picture is that it seems like everyone is focusing on the sax player. You can also see the intensity in his face which likely means he was killing it in this moment. It seems like he was a focal point for everyone in this scene, which makes me wish he stood out more in the photo.

@Janichsan : Real life Taiko no Tatsujin! I've not heard real taiko drumming before, but this picture reminds me a lot of street performances I've seen before. I love the background noise a street performance gives you on busy sidewalks.

And our folks podiuming in this week are:

3rd - @coolguy4747
2nd - @Strider64
1st - @_timo_redux_

You’re right, more tweaking required. I’ve tried below, changing the sheen on the sax:

I absolutely love taking shots like that. Back in middle school, when I took photography class, I experimented with black and white pictures featuring shadows and minimalist subjects. I used a DSLR camera to capture these images and learned how to use Photoshop and TV mode on the camera during my 8th grade year. Even long exposure photography, which is now much easier to achieve with iPhones and Live Photos, has made it possible to capture these images.

I set up my shot against a white background on my closet door and applied a black and white filter. The Apple Watch I wore in the picture is my mother’s Apple Watch Series 3 SBSS which I borrowed for this shot I took from the past.
