Weekly Photo Contest Jan 8th-14th 2012 // Escape

Topic: Escape

We're into the deep dark days of winter (at least here in the norther hemisphere where I am)... and like many, I could use an escape right about now... so post your best picture of an escape or somewhere I might rather want to be right now :D How inviting it appears as well as the technical merits of the photo will determine the winner. :)

Rules:

1. You may only submit one photo per contest.

2. Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

3. The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread)

4. At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision)

5. The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest.
(Winner has 48 hours to create new theme)

I'll kickstart this one off.

This was a family Holiday in Kenmore in Scotland (this is my sister).

Still the best landscapes I have ever seen.

Hilo, Hawai'i
Hilina Pali, Big Island (of Hawai'i).

If you're unlucky, there might be 5 or 6 people in the area. If you're lucky, it's only you.

Not too many miles away, lava is flowing into the Pacific.

Ok, I'm going to close this contest and pick a winner. All the pictures are very worthy, but I'm going to focus my attention on the following photos which capture my intent of offering an escape from winter Exile to a better place. :D

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii.

This happens to be one of my favourite escapes, and you've captured it well. It's a great photo and really made me wish I was there.

Warm sand, an ocean breeze, and palm trees swaying in the wind. Escape to paradise.

Kapaa, Kauai, HI

This is a beautiful picture and really captured my imagination... The absence of people in the shot drew me in and had me pondering what it would be like to spend time there. The saturation and post treatment really liven the photo... good work! Lovely!

This is perhaps the most exotic photo of the contest... the colour, composition, and exotic nature of the landscape really draws you in. My only issue with this photo, related to this particular contest, is that the foreground landscape doesn't appeal to me as an escape... it looks kind of inhospitable.

Lunch beside Hallstat lake, Austria. Accompanied by the local brew, naturally.
Although this is not the sharpest photo, I suspect that is more the fault of MR's attachment handling than the photo itself. Never the less, you had me at "local brew". It's a great setting and the food and beer seal the deal. You, sir, win this contest for offering the best "escape" from my winter doldrums!

So the ranking is:
1st: JAWJr
2nd: tekmoe
3rd: Nicolasdec
4th: TexasChemE

Also Winners: Everyone else! :)

BTW, JAWJR, the onus is on you to now create a follow-up contest for next week! :D

Thanks for judging! Good to know you value the same qualities in an "escape" :) A new contest will be up shortly.
