Next week is Lunar (Chinese) New Year here in Taiwan, our equivalent of Christmas in the West in that everything is closed, everyone heads back home for dinner with the entire family where that one weird uncle everyone has embarrasses the whole table, ugly sweaters are acceptable, and you need pants one size larger when the holiday ends a week later. Since the color of festivities in Chinese-speaking cultures is red, let's go for something completely different and do green this week instead. And since 'tis the season to be festive, let's go in a totally different direction as well and see if there's anything green that's gloomily grim—although that latter point is merely a suggestion, not a requirement.

To kick things off, how about some nice green shrubbery that has a two-level effect with a little path running down the middle—and you can tell this is most definitely green because I shot this in glorious black and white!

Yesterday was a busy day, sorry for the delay. A great selection of moody greens this week, the perfect antidote to a holiday saturated with red.

@Snowlover : Nice shot of the lizard, who looks suitably grumpy to match my mood. The bright green in the foreground contrasts nicely with the beige in the back.

@C0ncreteBl0nde : A scene oozing with green, yet this is a green that speaks of dereliction instead of verdant vivacity. Suitably depressing.

@Janichsan : If I’m reading the German correctly, this looks like a marker for a gravesite for fallen German soldiers of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871? Also suitably depressing. Nice composition between the foreground and background, with the light coming in at just the right angle.

@oblomow : Seeing that there’s moss or algae on the surface of the puddle, I hope the water is purified before drinking! Good mix of different shades of dull and bright green, and the reflective dark surface of the water adds some contrast to the scene.

@mtbdudex : Compared to the previous entries, a different take on the theme. Only sprinkles of green in an otherwise low-contrast scene that speaks of a chilly winter day. I do feel that the scene could benefit from more bokeh to further separate the background.

@kendallm : Another different take, the green of the Boston Subway train adding punchiness to the more reddish and earthy hues of the background. Although not the dominating hue here, the green in this one is definitely eye-catching.

@_timo_redux_ : From the looks of it, this looks like it was shot on 120 film? Very interesting subject matter, and very good use of bokeh and contrasting colors as well. Gives me an “I wish I had taken it” feel!

@arkitect : Sort of like @mtbdudex and @kendallm combined, only a sprinkling of green, but in a punchy, high contrast and saturated (both in terms of color and humidity) scene. I like the contrast between light and darkness here, as well as the fact that it gives me the creeps.

The podium this week:

3rd: tie between @C0ncreteBl0nde and @Janichsan (I can’t decide between the two)
2nd and 1st: I'm equally torn between @_timo_redux_ and @arkitect , but since @_timo_redux_ already featured in the first week of January, how about we give @arkitect a go this week?

@piatigorsky Awesome!
That was a very nice birthday surprise. Thank you…

I shall try and come up with something interesting.

I will open it tomorrow morning, UK time.

Thanks again and I am glad it succeeded in creeping you out. 😁
