Maybe I am being too single-minded right now, but I have been cold and there is ice on the ground. This week's theme is frozen. Feel free to take this any way you want; it doesn't have to be ice AKA frozen water! It could be...frozen with fear, a general feeling, a margarita, just plain cold, any frozen substance, the Disney movie I suppose, or whatever comes to mind.

To kick this off, here's a photo of ice crystals that formed on some dry ice that was melting in my sink last year:

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends January 13.

Alright, here we go...

@_timo_redux_ : Stunning. Very simple and very complex at the same time. I love how simple the color palette is, and the gradient of the sky in the background. The framing allows for a million possibilities for the overall setting - it could be the middle of nowhere or in a well populated area. Very relatable, even if every viewer has a different point of view.

@oblomow : Great capture. Looks like a very intimidating show of nature. The varying angles of the rocks and the straight vertical of the icicles/sheets of ice make a great visual, and the person adds meaningful context for the grandeur of the scene. I'm imagining it keeps going up and up and up.

@kendallm : Another very relatable scene! The bright orange jacket adds a nice pop to an otherwise dreary-looking setting. Really conveys the "frozen" feeling, and makes me grateful that I'm warm inside (right now...10 minutes ago I was out in 12°).

@mollyc : Beautiful. Love the warm color palette in a very cold scene. Looks so peaceful. Another one that could be in the middle of the wilderness, or on the edge of a city. Makes me think of nature documentaries about Yellowstone in winter. The branches are so perfectly coated in white.

@C0ncreteBl0nde : Wow! I don't envy you if you had to drive anywhere, but I'm a little glad it happened to you 🤣 This is a gorgeous image. I love how many different textures/patterns of ice there are on one piece of glass. My eyes just keep going around and around. Great contrast captured here.

@Snowlover : I'm almost at a loss for words here! There's so much about this. It looks so, so, so peaceful, like I want to just sit here for hours...if it weren't so cold! The snow-coated branches are so pristine, and the orange and green through the snow and dreary haze are all so captivating. It's like some kind of mystical meadow in a fantastical story.

@someoldguy : Frozen indeed! This one's very intriguing. I can only imagine what happened before this! That is some very intense ice. I love how it looks like a desolate, bitterly-cold scene, yet there are people around, seemingly having a lovely time. The quality of light on the snow and ice really makes it pop, with great shadow and contrast from the low sun, against a beautiful blue sky. Very inviting, again despite how cold it must be.

@piatigorsky : Love it, a non-ice take on the topic. I'm not familiar with this insect, and I'm sure I wouldn't love to have one (or a swarm) flapping around me, but it makes a stunning display. The colors and gentle softness convey a very pleasant atmosphere, and while there's not much context to know tell for sure, I can make up a situation that makes sense to me. And that "little" bug isn't aware of any of it, "frozen" and whatnot. Probably wouldn't feel so peaceful it it weren't.

@chown33 : While I'm sure it's none too small, the perspective makes it look enormous. Big, beefy neck and all. A different take on a swan than I'm used to, and I'm enjoying it. Frozen ground, frozen stare, I'd be frozen if that fella had its eyes on me. I like the contrast of the dark legs and feet against the white snow, and the white body against the darker shades in the background, as well as all the dark ducks spotting the scene.

@mtbdudex :Another stunning scene. I love the juxtaposition of the "roaring" waterfall against the otherwise frozen environment. Some lovely textures of ice, snow, and water here, surrounded by snowy forest. Still snowing, even! I'd love to witness something like this myself. Must be absolutely worth the "frozen" feeling (if you couldn't tell by now, I'm not really a fan of the cold 😂).

Wow. As always, you all make it really tough to choose. I'll do my best, and honestly everyone is a winner here.

3rd: @_timo_redux_
2nd: @mtbdudex
1st: @Snowlover

Thank you all for your entries, and see you all in the next one!

Wow, thanks for the win and wonderful comments.
I am at a loss for words at your appreciation and how you experienced what I did when taking the picture.

Great entries everyone!

Will ponder and post new contest tomorrow.

Congrats to the winners this week. I'm not familiar with this insect either (it's a local species of grasshopper), but my SO said that she's seen this creature on hikes, and the real live thing is huge. For myself, I was particularly pleased about the colors I got from this roll of film: this was the first time I put a serious effort into shooting Portra, and I could immediately see why it costs significantly more than Gold/Ultramax.

Congrats to the winners ; and thanks for the commentary on the entries !
As apocalyptic as it may appear , around 2 - 300 feet or so to the left of the image everything is bare and snow free .
The icing is caused by spray coming from the Great Falls at Paterson N.J. . The spray was freezing on contact with any surface it hit , and built up pretty rapidly over a few really cold days . Pretty tough to walk on . Got some cold on the way next week , maybe we'll get a rerun .

fun contest, enjoyed the pictures shared and the judging.
My submitted image was taken Feb-10-2024, I have 2 children attending MTU in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
We were visiting them and went for a 2 hour day hike along the Canyon falls trail. Some of it on the frozen river. Myself and wife were wearing foot spikes for more grip.

Sorry, just meant there’s a part of me that appreciates it happened, so you were able to share this photo…
Oh, okay. Sorry, I'm more than a little punchy these days...lots of sleepless nights and stress.

I was off to the clinic early in the morning and the car was covered in ice. I had thought I wouldn't be able to join in on your contest as I didn't have any fitting photos, then it occurred to me as I was waiting for my car to warm up to take a photo of the "Frozen" window.

I would have hated to be in your shoes this week as everyone's photos were great.
