    OK, here we go.

This week, I am looking for some inspiration. I have chosen “Beautifully Aged” as the theme. Something I am not, [EDITED:]*******************************.:)

So, when we walk around our environment, we see lots of old holding its own next to new. Old buildings next to new buildings, newborns next to their Grandparents or classic cars next to the latest models. A classic is a classic.

The challenge this week is to come up with an image that exemplifies the beauty of an old icon next to a future one. To show that things do get better with age or that a design classic is timeless.

Use your imagination and have fun!

    Rules:

    • The photographs must be your own work.
    • Be creative and have fun.
    • You may only submit one photo per contest.
    • Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.
    • The contest runs for one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)
    • At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
    • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

This contest will close on August the 3rd around 6pm UK time.

Hey Ken, are you inferring that your wife is old...similar to an old building or an old icon but you're not? :)

Think laterally... doesnt have to be a selfie with a crinkly... a nice aged whisky in a modern glass. A vintage Port, a modern skyscraper behind a classic frontage in town. An old school barber next to a modern supermarket... old pair of boots next to a new pair of sneakers... a roll of film next to an SD card...

You can do it, I know you can...

York Minster shot from the old wall. The fading sunlight just made this shot for me.

OK, here we go. SO the topic this week was looking to the juxtaposition of old and new. Looking for examples of beautifully aged subjects in a scene and I think we got a result!

Opening the batting we had @georgeinnj with a fantastic example of granny-glam. A fabulous capture of a sophisticated lady making an effort when out for a walk with hubby (I assume). Great colour contrast, lovely vibrant subject and a nice day for it by the look of it. I do however find the backdrop a tad busy but the overall feel of the image is lovely.

Next @Alexander.Of.Oz, a nice picture of new trying to overshadow old. A great example of the beauty of old architecture done well, can stand its own next to the steel and glass of modern design. I really like the colours of the old building and wish it was a bit more prominent in the frame. Had it been taken from a slightly further away vantage point, I think this would have been a perfect capture of the subject.

@anotherscotsman. Playing the game well again, playing to my inner petrol head. I happen to be a fan of the Thunderbird and it is always nice to see one of Pininfarina’s designs in the flesh. I really like the colour contrast in this image and the pano crop accentuating the low slung design of these beauties. I find it really interesting that we see the old 50s and 60s American cars as long and wide boats but next to the Ferrari, it isn’t that big actually. A really nice capture and plays to the theme and my heart equally well.

@highdefjunkie now we are talking! A shot of old and not quite as old. A classic pair representing the years of US air superiority with a Mustang P51D (I think?) and an F4 Phantom. The latter was replaced by the F14 Tomcat I think? might be wrong. Some classic heavy metal here representing a golden era of aircraft. A pair of analog relics in a digital world. I like the sepia effect to add to the age and it is a beautiful shot with great details. Lovely!

@MacRy, a lovely image capturing a new monument next to an old icon. The dome of St Pauls, known the world over with a leading line coming in from the Millennium bridge. I have trudged over that many a time on the way between London locations. I like the B&W treatment and the use of a large depth of field. I wonder however if maybe it could have benefitted from a slightly lower angle to give separation from the buildings over the water and the bridge. Lovely lighting and a great subject fitting the brief nicely.

@RedOctober. a superb joke! I laughed at this one. it tickled me pink. A great tongue in cheek capture and testament to when the owner eventually does age beautifully.

@soulreaver99 an fantastic picture of an old timer rocking out on modern synth equipment. A great street capture and an interesting look on his face. I get a tad distracted by the guy blowing his nose on the left but it is a great use of colour and a lovely capture of someone going for it enjoying life!

@deep diver A lovely capture of classic architecture flanked by a modern future landmark. I really like the juxtaposition but felt frustrated about the old engineering metal structure in front of it. Then I realised. It is the contrast of tone between the old engineering frame and the modern architecture behind that is the subject! fantastic example of Old verses new. I love seeing these old metal structures with the shed on top and thinking, who worked up there? did they have a whole workshop there, working in the sky like it was on the ground. I think that would be awesome! nice tonality and lighting.

@Indydenny ah the ultimate in aged beauty. The lady herself. An amazing thing to behold in the fabric. A long walk to find a picture you thought would be bigger. I like the picture of people clambering to get a picture of the picture with their modern smartphones. The image is great but I am really not a great fan of selective colour. I wonder would it be more compelling should you use some creative dodging and burning?

@Apple fanboy A lovely capture with lots going on, frame within a frame, golden hour lighting, old juxtaposed with new, building materials and colour contrasts galore. Lovely. The Minster is lit up sublimely. Well timed indeed.

@bigsid welcome aboard! A fantastic picture of aged boats languishing in the low tide. I love the decay of wood in an image. It has such depth of character and textures. Fantastic lighting and a great composition. Maybe if you had dropped the highlights a tab in the clouds to not clip them then it would have added a bit more drama but as you will see from being round here, I know nothing so feel free to ignore.

@dwfaust, the almost too late, just as the doors were being locked, slipped in with a beautiful example of aged tools. There is a great joy to be had from using a well made tool that you have used from new. A beautiful image contrasting the new power driver and measuring tools alongside the classic old equipment. Fantastic lighting, lovely colour use to presumably stop the yellow of the measuring tape and drill from overpowering the image. A great selection of tools to include but feel that maybe making the plane a little more prominent would make it more powerful? Overall though a lovely image.

So, thats the comments, now for the standings. First, a shout out to Apple Fanboy for that lovely lighting capture. A great image. Now you know I try to be controversial in my judging, trying to move away from the obvious - that and I am just wired weirdly so tend to not think like others.

    Here goes.

    3rd place: MacRy

    2nd place: Highdefjunkie

    1st place: Deep Diver

Thank you so much for contributing to the competition, some great entries this week, it has been a pleasure judging it and I am super excited to see if I can add some value to the next comp! Over to the winner….

Great critique Ken. Must be all the practise your getting!
Lovely range of images this week, and not a selfie in sight!
As for my shot, I was working near York so decided to head into town to capture the Minster. Found this angle up on the old wall, and the beautiful lighting really made it work for me.
Of course I had to wait an hour or two in a local pub for the right lighting! The sacrifices we make for our art :D
    On to the next.

Fantastic range of colours. The light was fantastic! well worth the time invested having to endure the pub until the time was right

Sometimes you just have to take one for the team. After nearly killing myself choking on a shot of jack Daniels once, I dont drink alone either...

Drinking Jack Daniels alone? That's only one step off Tenents Super on a Glasgow park bench!
As part of my diet (and another reason) I've not had a drop of alcohol since Christmas Day.
Really missing a beer on Friday after work though.
