Sorry guys, did my best with the critique but I had tons of editing to do so I kept it short.

SOLLERBOY: since the focus is on the upper part of the carrot, I think it would have helped if its lit a tad more. Maybe placing a sheet of paper to bounce a little light back to it.

cupcakes2000: really digging the colors in this one. Processing is probably the same direction I would have done to it.

Fezwick: Great clarity but the image might work better if it was taken from a different angle but I understand how that would be a struggle.

SonicChronicler: I feel you pain about working with marco lenses. I was having the same issue. With that said, this photo would definitely look great if a macro lens was used instead of a zoom lens and just cropping.

Sideonecincy: A change in crop and a little tilting might work betterfor the image. That might help the subject appear stronger as it should.

jabbott: I like the clarity but I think if the right eye was a bit lower (rule of thirds), the image would be even better.

VI™: food! I was hoping someone would post some. I like the processing on this one but I think the DOF could be a bit bigger so its a bit more clear what the subject is/are. Right now that one artichoke is the only focus. The message would be more clear if the second row was also a bit more in focus.

mulu: great colors and clarity. was this a set up or something you came across? something I've always wanted to try.

firedept: might help if you stepped a bit closer.

justinLONG: clarity is great but I think it needs a little punch. Maybe contrast or vibrance.

illy123: yeah ok, that's macro right there! It would be great to see a behind-the-scenes on how you shot this.

deep diver: I like reflection on the music sheet on the body of the instrument, but it seems like its more of a crop than a close-up shot.

I AM THE MAN: yes you are! great colors! the focus seems to be a bit soft but i still like the whole image.

JDDavis: great shot! clarity definitely gives every detail of the scale. and that pop of blue is insane!

someoldguy: I like this photo since you were able to get up close to something that seems to be really small. It would have helped if everything on the top plane of the mechanism was in focus rather than just the gear (is that what you call it?) thats on the top center.

AlexH: Nice one Alex, the bee seems a bit blurry and the focus is on the flower. Looks good though.

Somepix: I can see this image being stronger if the eyes were a bit brighter and had a little more punch to it.

Macman45: I think you could have gone a bit closer to emphasize on the water droplets.

Chapperts:Great colors on the subject. Wouldn't mind seeing the all-colored version.

HarryPot: smaller aperture might work better just so more of the body is in focus.

macAllen: Great job on this one. I really like the processing and depth is really good.

r.harris1: good composition, I'm a fan of negative space. Maybe bump up the vibrance a bit.

GT41: A bit soft on the focus. Been meaning to try this one too.

Bartlindon: clarity and focus is great! Colors are amazing too.

iTiki: leaving the background as is specially if there was a nice DoF might help isolate the subject better.

JDDAVISCongrats..... Great lizard!
ILLY123
Great bug headshot ... How'd you do it? Focus Stacking? What lens?

Couple of notes on my entry .... Taken with a 5D2 and an MP-E 65mm macro lens at 2.5X ( more or less) f5@3.2 sec. , cable release , tripod , and a set of focusing rails I bought eons ago in film days and hardly ever used. The image is of the guts of a Vulcain watch from the 70's . It's part of a set I did attempting to capture the motion of the escapement wheel and 1 or 2 of the gears which were obviously moving...

According to the Canon literature , at this magnification and f-stop the DOF is .18mm (.007" +/-). which was way less than I thought . So now my homework is to redesign and build a focusing rail that will move the camera in or out in increments of .001 or .002 . Something to do over the winter.

Thanks for the comments; I don't have a setup shot for that one but I do for this

Basically; Canon 600D + Canon 60mm macro + 60mm (ish) of opteka extension tubes + 430EX + custom flash diffuser. Photos are cropped quite a bit so I'm guessing the magnification is around 3:1; they are taken at 1/125, f/9, ISO 200 and I focus-stack around 4-5 shots to get the whole head in.

thanks for posting the BTS'ish shots. Always interesting to see how you guys get the shot done.

All good feedback...It's a field of photography I must explore more, thanks for the suggestions!:)

Thanks pakyooh! That was a task to judge all of those entries. There where some great ones in there for sure.

I apologize for being late with this. Work is a killer lately and I can't check as regularly as I used to. I try not to enter ones when I'm on the road.

Anyway, thanks again and I'll have a new contest up today!
