It's been awfully rainy around here for the last few weeks ; so let's try the opposite of rainy ..... this weeks subject is DRY .
Let's see what you all can do with this ...

As always, standard rules apply:

The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
Contest ends on June 15 at Noon EDT (UTC-4)

So here we go , just remember that I’m not any kind of expert in anything , least of all judging any kind of competition .

@goldmac2006 – Some sort of horned lizard ? Probably hot as well as dry . Nice job finding it and getting a good shot .

@Snowlover – Nice clear capture ,narrow DOF shot at a high aperture maybe ? The out of focus background works well .

@C0ncreteBl0nde – A different take on a dried leaf . Really narrow depth of field works with the black background . Think I would have cloned out those little white specs on the bottom so as to achieve a totally black background .

@mtbdudex – The Windows ! Arches certainly qualifies as dry . The red of the sandstone contrasts nicely with the essentially cloudless sky . Did you get up to the North(?) window where the folks are standing?

@oblomow – What happened here? You’ve got a dried out / dead area with what appears to be a green area in the far distance . Salt water incursion / fire / someone got a really good deal on Roundup ? Is that an irrigation or drainage ditch in the foreground ?

@kendallm - Even the fountain’s dried up ….. seems to have been an oppressively hot day when this was taken . Those folks waiting for a bus ? Sure hope it came soon .

@mollyc – Didn’t expect this ! A whole different take on the subject , plus in B&W . What’s giving the reflection in the foreground ? A shiny or wet countertop ? But a nice new house and no dishwasher ? (or that’s the kids’ job)

@_timo_redux_ - Focused solar array ? Is this the one in Nevada? I like the way the mirror’s reflections appear to create a flare at the top of each or the towers .

@richardallan - Some sort of salt or alkali lake that’s dried up ? Or some sort of failed ranching/agricultural experiment? There’s fenceposts going off into the distance , plus rusty barbed wire . But the background seems to be relatively verdant . Gotta be an interesting story here .

Winners are real hard to pick , especially in this case where there are no obvious losers , but here goes …

3rd - @mollyc & @C0ncreteBl0nde

2nd - @_timo_redux_

1st - @mtbdudex

Congrats to all who entered in what was a surprisingly hard challenge .

@mtbdudex , it’s all yours for the next one .

Thank you for the mention! Congratulations to all podium holders.

The reflection is just the countertop. It's actually a matte finish granite, but when the light hits it right it does add a reflection. Our house is nice, but not so new anymore (13 years!) and I do quite a bit of hand washing because I don't like to put a lot of our larger bowls/cookware through the dishwasher. Also, I'm lazy, and rack drying takes no effort other than waiting an hour or two for things to airdry!

It's a bog that has been covered by snow. The grass is dead, the conifers in the distance stay green all year. In the foreground is a road/path.

Thanks for the podium spot! and great comments on all the entries.

I'm not actually at all sure what it is, but yeah, out my airplane window somewhere on the CA/NV border, so probably a solar array. I remember being mesmerized and glad I had my phone handy.

This is a salt pan on Kangaroo Island. It was taken at the end of summer. The climate there is mainly hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters so I daresay it fills with water occasionally. I have no idea why there is the remains of a barbwire fence across it. Maybe it wasn't always salty or wet. That's not unknown in this country.
