OK everyone -- nice pictures!
@Fravin A truly terrific — and to me, exotic — photograph of a landscape that feels Seussian. Love the layers, and yes, I think this picture captures that clean, just-after feeling of a great rainfall
@kendallm Great candid. The conversion (I’ll assume it was a conversion) to black and white seems smart, and the subject of umbrellas and rainy walks is for me always evergreen. Tiny bit put off by the umbrella’s writing, but of course for a street photograph you get what you get
@Snowlover Another “after the rain” effort; yes, water is so impressive in its force. A bit thrown by the window sash showing up on the lower right; I would have cropped it out
@iPhone-Guy And again, after the rain … who doesn’t love a rainbow? Not sure what the farmstead is adding to the photo at bottom; maaybe a crop with just the treetop included would have taken some of the feel of clunkiness away for me
@C0ncreteBl0nde Raindrops on a window is a classic. I like the various textures of the fir too. I’m a little distracted by the sash division being out of focus, and what I take to be a window reflection in the upper right corner
@cjsuk Again, the raindrops on the window; here with them in focus and pleasantly blurring out the background of still-recognizable jets. I think this kind of background blur is very strong here, as one can be distracted by the branding of the jets while still understanding/feeling you're at the airport. A good image and I like the added white border too
@arkitect The taking-refuge picture; here, quite successful. It can be difficult in a photograph to show how hard a particular downpour is — here, you show the rain sure but more clearly the evidence of needing to step out of it. Though people always being on their phones is a boring subject you’ve managed to capture — between those bookends — one background guy looking pensive or thoughtful, but even better the child in front looking out into the drama of a hard rain. The way the child’s hands are held somewhat like the adults’ is an added bonus. I might have cropped some of the empty top of the picture away; I don’t know that the sign and traffic light reflections are adding much. But well done
@oblomow I like patterns and their disruption; rain can be a disruption to the pattern of our days. Anyway, a nice vignette where the simple reflection and framing of the picture almost invites one to think of another world behind this mundane one. I would have cropped square, but that’s just me
@James6s I’ll assume another after-the-rain effort, though is it, with the sun set? Fast moving storm, maybe. Lovely layers, I think I’m OK with the framing of the pylon at left and the railroad signal at right; maybe distracted by the roof texture of the little hut at the bottom, and the sunset reflection in the glass
@goldmac2006 After the rain in SoCal … where the rain can be so dramatic. No LA river pic? LA in the rain is crazy because, for a moment, it can look green like some kind of alien Scotland … anyway, the wide angle here is giving you a kind of leaning for the buildings and structures, and I’m not so sure where my eye is supposed to go. I'd like, e.g., the repetition of the lights — and maybe lights on the wet sidewalk — to be more pronounced
@someoldguy That thatched edge feels like it shapes and has been shaped by regular rain. And nothing says regular rain quite like those intense greens of tropical locations. A simple pictures with layers: I appreciate the reduction of elements in the picture. That being said: maybe those cool-looking leaves at the far left should either be more completely in the picture or excluded entirely from the picture. Included they would complicate it, as they’re on a different, closer plane than the background jungle, but maybe that would be helping “frame” the jungle and rain just as the thatch overhang is doing. Or the picture might be cleaner if it were excluded
A note on my photo-editing biases: I’m not just OK to crop, I’m a fan of cropping. If you’re not, alas, it may make some of my critiques of no value to you.
Finally, as for “who wins,” anyone on the podium could have been the winner. I gave preference to those pictures that presented either a simple, elegant take or alternatively more of what it
feels like with rain:
