Shallow DOF

Portraits, objects, things, nature, endless opportunity here.

Shoot wide open, use a telephoto, use a smartphone, however you achieve it, let's see your creativity!

A "shallow depth of field" in photography refers to a situation where only a small area or part of the image is in sharp focus, while the background and foreground become blurred. This effect isolates the main subject, creating a more selective focus and can be used to enhance a portrait, isolate a subject from distracting surroundings, or create a more dramatic effect.

Example: ƒ/2.8 | 1/100 | 125mm | ISO100

My judging of: Weekly photo contest | May 05 - May 12 | Shallow DOF

@goldmac2006
Lovely purple grabs attention, the delicate pedal “tendrils” hanging are neat

@mollyc
Delicate and light flowering bud with bokeh diffusion

@cjsuk
This say’s “Summer” to me, dragonfly in it’s glory sunning away

@Snowlover
An Acorn lost it’s tree-mate, possibly the loss will become a full fledged tree in it’s own right someday

@Strider64
Solitary bird, I take it you used a quite large zoom lens to capture this shot, now I’m wondering “what’s he looking at?”
(Metadata showed 400mm at f2.8)

@drlocomotive2088
This say’s “Spring” to me, butterfly resting (pollinating?) on a pink flower.

@C0ncreteBl0nde
Yellow!! I love the crisp yellow flower / pedals with yellow backdrop. Happiness, warmth, joy.

@oblomow
Nearly Tulip time, these multi-colored ones poised ready to open up and greet the world.

@OldMacs4Me
Pink at f4, the brown flower part centered captures my attention, I’m not a flower expert curious on it now.

@kendallm
The golden hour being enjoyed with warmth of a table warmer? I’m kinda fascinated by the fire twirls. Makes me ponder is this a seaside locale, or?

@richardallan
Wow, truly a unique capture, mezzmerizing, nature showing off

@iPhone-Guy
Dew on a deeply purple pedal

@arkitect
I have to say this image truly captivates me, very creative, eye wandering

13 entries, each distinct and with it’s authoring story.
Thank you all for participating.

With that, here’s my judging:

3rd place
@Strider64
What am I looking at? Love it.

2nd place
@arkitect & @kendallm
I found myself truly enjoying both of these for their everyday mechanical objects and DOF usage at art creation

1st place
@richardallan
This one I kept coming back to and just pondering on it.

Off to the next weekly photo contest

Wow! Thank you @mtbdudex for choosing my photo. This was taken at Lane Cove National Park in Sydney, NSW, Australia. It is a new tree fern frond just starting to uncurl. There were quite a few of these growing on the sides of a creek where a footpath crossed on a small bridge. I took this hanging over the railing of the bridge. The image contains metadata if anyone wants to have a look at that.

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition. Thanks again to @mtbdudex for running it. PS. I love your house!

I'll get the next comp up and running shortly and link to it here.

Thank you @mtbdudex very much for the excellent judging!
Congrats to @richardallan — beautiful shot.

Glad you enjoyed my pic.

It was just an in the moment thing… Sat having a coffee at Society Cafe here in Bath and saw the Guildhall reflected on the back of my Phone and thought… Hmmmm.

The old Vivitar 28mm f/2.8 Close Focus lens did the rest. 😄

An excellent topic, @mtbdudex and thoughtful, positive and encouraging judging of the entries that were submitted.

Some terrific shots, exquisitely composed.

Personally, I loved the image submitted by @arkitect; anything that celebrates a morning coffee meets with my passionate approval, and I loved the lines, muted warm colours, and composition of the shot.

Loved @kendallm's shot - again, lovely lines and composition, and very attractive colours.

Of the flower shots, I was especially taken with @oblomow's gorgeous palette, and the warmth of @C0ncreteBl0nde's shot.

And, of course, lines, composition and colour all combined rather compellingly in @richardallan's impressive image.
