2023

Judging done.
Here are a few thoughts.

@goldmac2006 - Nicely exposed photo of, I guess, Las Vegas. It’s a pity you have cut off the base of the fountains and have included so much of the buildings which aren’t as interesting.

@cjsuk - This is well done. The waterfall looks great. But I think it’s one of those where you have got two pictures in one. I think you would have got better results if you had taken a photo of the waterfall and a seperate one of the water flowing down below.

@Strider64 - Interesting effort. I love the reflections in the water droplets. But when you do a simple setup like this you need to pay attention to detail. The picture is a bit wonky and the tap could do with a clean.

@mollyc - This is brilliant. It’s one of those photos which doesn’t really have a subject but it’s all about the light. Only criticism is I think too much of the lower third is a bit too dark.

@mtbdudex - This is different. I like the way you have captured the water coming out of the snow/ice. Probably could be improved by cropping out or blurring some of the distracting background.

@drlocomotive2088 - I like how you have the water flowing diagonally across the frame but there are a lot of distracting elements here. I think the photo could have been much improved by taking it from a much lower level.

@Snowlover - Quite the opposite to snow! Nice shot but the horizon isn’t straight. I probably would have tried to get closer to the edge here, if possible, to avoid the distractions in the bottom corners. I don’t think they add anything to the shot.

@oblomow - “moving water” - I love it! I like the ripples in the water and the reflection of the sky with the cloud. The green reeds add a bit of contrast.

@C0ncreteBl0nde - This is a good photo of a very unfortunate incident. Fire and Water. I would never thought of that. The moving water from the firehose against the background of the flames is spectacular.

@Janichsan - Can’t really fault this one. I would have maybe pointed the camera down a bit to lose a bit of the top and include the whole rock at the bottom right there. I think it also needs something that will make it “pop” a bit so there is some contrast between the water and the surroundings. Water is handled extremely well though.

@yey365 - Can’t really fault this one either but it has much more impact. The texture in the water is beautiful. I just love those small waves, how they curve around and are reflecting the land and sky in the background.

@kendallm - This is nice light and I like the spray/mist at the top right. The water has been handled well but I can’t help but think it could have been improved a bit if you had moved around to the right a bit and also cropped in a bit to cut out some of the distracting surroundings.

@piatigorsky - Black and white film. Great stuff. It’s contrasty, grainy and “crunchy” for want of a better word. The water is spot on. The steps and railing are interesting but they compete with the water a bit. Composition is good and you are sort of left wondering where the water is coming from.

@uacd - Waves crashing on the beach in the night. Scary stuff. It’s a pity you didn’t take this a bit earlier when there would still have been a bit of light in the sky. As it is three quarters of the photo is just dark nothing.

@someoldguy - This has potential. I think it could have been improved by having less of the bamboo pipe and more of the water droplets in the frame. I think the water droplets would look better if you had either frozen them, really sharp or blurred them more. Also, the background is very distracting.

@_timo_redux_ - This is another one where I think it is almost two images especially with the cityscape being so small in the frame, looking so far away. I like the water but my eye keeps moving back and forth from the foreground to the top of the frame and doesn’t really settle anywhere.

So, now to the results. This of course is my opinion. It has been a difficult decision and has taken some time. It is also very close. There are some very good photos here and some interesting interpretations of the theme.

In 3rd Place - @C0ncreteBl0nde

2nd Place - @piatigorsky

1st Place - @yey365

Congratulations…

So now it's over to you, @yey365, to start the next competition.

Yup that was Caesars Palace at Las Vegas, scrolled through the camera roll and found that pretty picture of the fountains overseeing the hotel.

It was shot on iPhone 7, long exposure Live Photo

Wow, 1st place and great competition all round on this one. Thank you.

I have this as my look away picture for screen breaks and mindfulness. Beautiful calm evening departing Halifax, Nova Scotia on a cruise last autumn.

Next contest is up and an area I am not confident in - Street photography: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/weekly-photo-contest-may-22-29-street.2457497/

Thanks for the feedback! I have a couple of other compositions of this scene, but I liked the contrast between the land and water in this one.

What are your thoughts on these others if you don't mind sharing? Just curious which one you like better, I'm still very much a beginner so I appreciate the feedback!

The last one in this grid is the one I submitted (with some very minor edits)

Thank you @richardallan for the podium spot; I REALLY was not expecting it as there are so many GREAT entries in this contest. I had made an album of all my "moving water" photos and had even decided on a different image when this photo popped up in my library and I said "THAT'S the one!". Congrats to @yey365 and @piatigorsky as well as everyone who entered these amazing shots!

Excellent contest, - some wonderful entries - and terrific topic, @richardallan; the judging was comprehensive, fair-minded (mind you, it is possible that I am writing that chiefly because I found myself in agreement with many of your remarks), and thoughtful.

Personally, I loved the entries submitted by @mollyc, @_timo_redux_, @yey365, (yes, I think that these images reflect a certain theme) and - this was a glorious and compelling image - the stunning shot submitted by @C0ncreteBl0nde.

It’s a bit hard to tell from small thumbnails but I like 3, 5 & 7.
