Awesome pics this week which makes this very hard to judge. This really came down to picking my favourite as the quality was so high.

One of my earlier shots. The only one I can think of that has leading lines.

With this one I love how the sepia effect lifts the wooden pier out of the photo and accentuates it, which wouldn’t be the case if the shot was in colour. It brings the eye right along the pier and up to the clouds, giving more depth to the photo than would otherwise have been there. I think the grainy effect used takes away from the dramatic sky slightly, as the clouds look more as if they are painted, which I know is what the effect is meant to show, but I think naturally dramatic clouds would have added more atmosphere to the photograph.

I like the colours in this as well as detail on the ground. Not sure if the depth of field is quite right as there only seems to be one small point in focus. Also, the leading line doesnt really lead me anywhere interesting. But, I like how close you got to the ground to take this.

From the archives (Wow, I guess I know have enough photos to actually call something an archive!)

The trees in this are very impressive and you captured their height very well. I also like the way they look a little unbalanced making a drive on this narrow road quite exciting. A bit closer to the ground would have been my choice but very well done.

Nice silhouette as it keeps the shape of the faces and its nicely framed. Was the vignetting on purpose? I wouldn't have added it/posted it out.

lovely dynamic range to capture the ceiling of the bridge and the trees in the background. I'm a claustrophobic person and this does capture a sense of being in a confined space well. (now let me out).

Firstly, I think your watermark is too big and distracting from your image. The image itself is a really nice B+W. Great detail on the wood and in the clouds and looks like a really peaceful place which is just about to get hit with a storm.

I think I may have used this one in a previous thread, but maybe not . . .

Image

This is a beautiful image that demonstrates how effective use of a composition technique can result in a stunning and hugely atmospheric photo. The similarity in the colours of the sky and the water really highlight the bridge and the lights from the cars, almost making it jump out of the shot. This is the type of scene that begs for a long exposure and that technique has been used brilliantly in this photo.

Don't know if this follows the topic, but i'll bite.

Yep, it fits the topic. i'd have used a flashgun for this one as the colours seem a bit dull. It would also bring out more detail on the leaf. But, its well framed

This one reminds me of the walk of faith in Indiana Jones when they had to walk across an invisible path. I think this would have been better if there was less of the foreground rocks in the picture.

i like the retro look. Where were you standing to take this? I doubt you climbed a pole for it but it looks like you did. The face in the man in this picture is very freaky but a good addition. Your exif data doesnt tell me the exposure time but i'm guessing its a few seconds.

Image

First time joining the contests here, I actually have something for this one.

i like it. Was this done with a fisheye lens or are my eyes warped? The direction written on the road makes this picture fit the topic perfectly. Reminds me of a time when I had to walk 25k home at 4 in the morning after a night on the beer. We were glad to meet the main road after dragging our feet for about 2 hours.

This one I love. The smoke/fog in the background along with the leaves and how you got so close to the yellows lines in the road gives me the feeling that a speed racer just shot up this road. Really good capture.

The line made by the wall isnt so apparent at first because of the red flower. I also think this could do with some sharpening and maybe some fill light.

New to the forum! Excited to share my passion for photography.

Saw the sky in my rear view. Had to pull over at the next overpass : )

Image

The dramatic clouds in this photo really make it stand out and give a sense of movement to the shot. This was obviously the natural light, but the way the sun is trying to break through the clouds at different points really makes the shot look like a move still or the start of a dramatic series of images. Definite sense of the calm before the storm. Great shot.

Took while I was on holiday.

You really have to click on this one to see it right. I'm not really sure what it is though. I'm guessing you were looking up through the centre of this, as opposed to my first impression that you were looking down. But, I would have preferred if more of this was in focus.

Wow, loads of brilliant entries so far, mine pales by comparison.

Love it, the colours, the framing, the depth of field, the detail on the buildings and the general sense of rush hour traffic in a poor society. I especially like the fact that the first car in the shot is a new toyota but all the others look old and run down. Makes this a product placement shot in which toyota stand out well. Slogan might be, 'Toyota city driving.... anywhere.'

For whatever reason the downsizing is adding some grain... Here is the original. (it's large)

This one makes me kinda dizzy looking up at the tops of these trees. Not exactly how I would have composed it. I might have tried to get closer to the tree in the foreground. But its hard to judge without being there. I like it though.

This is quite similar to a couple of the other pics above. Nice colours and position close to the ground. Feels like I'd just fallen to the ground can feel how sore it would have been on my hands if I hit this road.

From a house extension in the UK.

Looks like they did a good job. However, I might have out the distractions on the bottom left.

a shot from my trip to ireland
its from the area around the giants causeway in northern ireland if anyones wondering.

does anyone know if the forum supports bbcode?

Ah the homeland. I've never been to this part of Ireland but my mothers from there. Good sky, I'm guessing you used a polarizer filter. But, I think this might look better as a B+W as it would work well on the details on the rocks. Lightrooms clarity tool would help with that.

There are some amazing photos this week. Great stuff

Nice shot of the kids walking up the hill. Reminds me (here i go again) of when we were little and had no car. We had to walk 2 miles home with the shopping. There were 6 of us kids. We must have looked a sight.

I think the tone of this picture is a little flat and could use a boost but just a touch as to not lose the dusty look on the road.

Would be nice to be able to run and jump in. But, I'm guessing there would be shopping trolleys and nuclear waste around somewhere. Whats distracting to me in this image are the birds. I like birds but they seem to mess up the sky as bit in this one.

Looks like a lovely spot to have a picnic. Really nice colours and shadows from the trees. I'm surprised there arent people there. Hard to fault this one.

3 shot pano stitched together in Photoshop

love it, very well stitched. I'm surprised you got in with a DSLR and tripod. I think these things last all of a few seconds so really good to get this at its fullest. Excellent colours and very fitting to this time of year.

This is really good. Good reflection on the water of the pier. The pier looks massive thanks to the surfers in the shot.

I cant see your exposure time in your exif data but its obviously loooong. Its really impressive the way cameras can capture this and you've done it well. However, you seem to have lost a lot of detail in the house. Also, there are some distractions on the edges which I'd have cropped out.

Wow, this could work on a film poster for a film where America saves the world from some alien attack.... again. Great shot. I like the view that the guy has from his balcony, nearly as good as yours for this pic. The fire truck is bothering me as its parked all wrong haha. But that adds to the picture. The clouds are obviously dramatic. I cant tell your exposure time but would like to know in order to get an explanation to the ghosts in the middle of the road.

Ok so,

Third place: Keleko

Second place: AlexH

First place: NeGRit0

Sorry for the wait people. i've been very busy. Glad this is over as it was quite difficult to judge pictures far above my own ability.

Cheers

Thanks! Been getting a lot of praise for that one, but I'm not to happy with that edit so i'll be posting a new one on Flickr tomorrow. I'll be sure to cross post it here with the exif/pp for you. Will also post new topic in the am.

btw... Im surprised I won, the quality level this week was somethin' fierce, kudos to all who participated. Also, thank you again to fitshaced, as I know how hard judging can be.

Great contest, and congratulations to NeGRit0. I'm looking forward to the next contest.

The "retro look" is achieved by using a retro process. This was shot by using colour 4x5 film in a pinhole camera what was placed at the top of a ten foot pole pointing down at the ground. The man in the photo is actually me, making sure the wind doesn't tip the camera over. And yeah, the EXIF data will be pretty useless as there is none from time-of-capture. I believe the exposure time was somewhere between 10 and 20 seconds.

Great pictures, everyone. And nice job on the judging. Thanks for placing me in the top 3. I was worried I wasn't going to have a picture to enter until I took this one on Saturday.

There were people around, but 8:30am is not a normal picnic time. :) There were lots of people walking/running/biking right by this spot. I was running and stopped briefly to take the shot with my iPhone.

No tripods or monopods allowed in the stadium (without credentials) so these shots were handheld from my seat. I used my 35mm 1.8 on this panorama, but security did allow me to bring in a 70-300mm. As long as I wasn't trying to bring in a 500mm bazooka (no lens over 12 inches), they didn't have a problem with it.

Ah that makes sense. You've obviously got a very strong imagintation.

Thats one thing I need to learn, use the camera you have on you.

Congrats to all. Very tough one to judge-so many great photos. Thanks fitshaced for judging this one and your comments.

You're welcome

This is one I wouldnt have been able to take without a tripod. Well, without the stitching looking like a jigsaw puzzle.
