Is there a noticeable weight difference between the two? .3 pounds looks pretty light - about the difference of an iPhone mini perhaps - but curious what people think here. Does the lighter weight + tapered design lead to a more portable laptop? Or are they about the same?

pretty much imperceivable. its less than an iphone mini, and spread out over a volume the size of a laptop, you'd be hard pressed to tell unless grabbing it back to back to back.

its also not appreciably smaller in hand or in packing, given that the max height is similar

I got both with me right now. New m1 air and 2017 MacBook Pro. In reality - it's no difference. I think they will make the pro 14 inch next year and either keep the air 13 or 12 inch and make it thinner probably cause there is really hardly a reason for it to be an "air" other than no fan. its not actually that much thinner or lighter to be noticeable. also for the record this baseline air absolutely annihilates my 2017 MBP 13 inch in every possibly way shape and form. Absolutely a bargain.

If you held the MBA in one hand and the MBP in the other, you most likely wouldn't be able to tell which one is which by the weight - that's how little of a difference .3 lbs. makes.

0.2 lbs with the M1 (the Pro is back down to 3.0 lbs). Given how fast the M1 is in the MacBook Air, I'm hoping they eventually bring back the 12" MacBook (but with a "Magic Keyboard"). That design would be a perfect match for the M1.
