I would bring my iPad with the Folio case to accompany my MBP. The MK might be higher, but I'd rather have less weight. My 16 inch is already pushing 4.3 LBS!

You would be saving about 300 grams or 11 oz with the Folio variant. If the MacBook alone is 1800 grams, then it’s going to be difficult to feel the lighter bag in a blind A/B test. But sure, the Folio is slighly lighter.

In terms of hardware, the Surface Pro now is superior. With keyboard, the iPad pro is 3 lbs, the surface pro is 2.4 lbs. Both have a trackpad and lighted keys. The Surface Pro keyboard folds all the way back, the iPad does not.

Software is another matter. The iPad has the superior tablet software, but the surface pro can run all windows software. If one wants to use a tablet as a computer, which is the idea of the magic keyboard, why not use the surface pro, which is arguably the superior computer.

I am an Apple loyalist, but I'm seriously thinking if it's time to switch to surface.

You make really great points..

Once the analysis truly goes down the "tablet", but mostly docked/as a PC mode, the Surface really becomes very compelling.

One thing that drives me *insane* on iOS, particularly in comparison to a Mac or PC, is the severe limitations on browsers and the extension ecosystem (lack there of).

I would never switch but I can’t argue against what you’re saying.

You’re forgetting that the Surface Pro is useless as a tablet, while the iPad is leaps ahead when used as a tablet.

The drawing experience on the iPad Pro is also considerably better.

And don’t forget, you still have the Smart Keyboard Folio if you want less weight, which for me is still a great keyboard solution.

Not useless, just inferior. My wife's Surface Pro has replaced her iPad.

Which does not have a trackpad -- the surface pro has.

Exactly! The iPad is undoubtedly the best tablet on the market, and now with mouse/trackpad support and especially the magic keyboard it can also be a pretty good laptop. The Surface, on the other hand, is a terrible tablet, which is the point were this particular 2-in-1-concept instantly falls apart. That’s why the question „why not just get a real laptop“ is, in my opinion, a far more relevant criticism of the Surface than of the iPad.

The surface is a terrible tablet and a terrible laptop if you use it as the term ‘laptop’ is intended. It is terrible to use on the lap like an iPad with magic keyboard or a normal laptop. Surface pro is a great laptop if you are using it at a desk and for portability for that use. But for me I’d prefer a laptop and iPad Pro combo. I have a surface pro X as well but much prefer my iPad Pro with magic keyboard. Had the keyboard for nearly 24 hours now and it is brilliant.

Why is it "useless" as a tablet?

The Windows operating system is poorly optimised for touch input. While iPad OS was designed from the foundations as a touch interface. In comparison to iPad OS, it is useless.

Which does not have a trackpad -- the surface pro has.

Trackpad is an alternative not necessarily a superior input method. I have no problem using the touch screen to navigate.

If I want to use a cursor, then I can always carry a light weight mouse or trackpad.
