The last while, my 2016 MBP has been giving me only a couple of hours of battery life using normal apps like Mail, Excel, etc. When I check the "battery shaming" menu, I'm told no apps are using significant energy. The battery information says condition is normal, and cycle count is 279. CoconutBattery says the battery is at 81.8%, which isn't great, but should give me more than two hours. The base of the MBP is hot to the touch.

I'd have thought the battery was on its way out, but, again, the diagnostics seem fine. Or I'd have thought it's some rogue app, but apparently no apps are using significant energy.

Any ideas what this could be?

My 2016 also gives me around 2 hours, doing nothing but displaying PowerPoint presentations. I think that when your battery gets to around 80% that’s what happens.

Weird, I would have thought that 80% would give me something like 4 hours, not 2 hours. But thanks for the explanation, makes it clearer that it's probably the battery needing replaced.

I believe 80% health, is considered the point where the battery should be replaced.

Performance can become erratic and the battery may soon die completely.

How many cycles do you have on your battery? I would guess you have upwards to a 1000 cycles, or you have had a couple of deep discharges (down to 0%) than can quickly kill your battery.

Mine is at 88% (7736mAh), 9 cycles, and calibration + reset SMC controller didn't fix the issue...

If the battery is draining too quickly, and the computer seems to be getting hot, I'd check activity monitor to see what is consuming the power at such a rapid rate.

Sounds like an application or "behind the scenes" process that is running away on you.
